I am not a hardcore gamer, in fact I think I am as far from being a gamer as any man who has ever called himself a gamer. So I havn't ever played half-life yet, but I bought the orange box the other day, and I have indudldged myself with the fantastic portal and the fantastic Team fortress 2.

But then I thought, hell, why not give that half-life thing-y a try? But when I try to run half-life the game crashes along the time of when the main menu opens, and a window pop-up saying "platform error: module failed to initialize".

I want to freaking play this game? Does any of you clever people out there know what's wrong, and if you, could you please help me?

Don't know if this is useful info that could be part of the problem but I play on an HP laptop, and my OS is Windows Vista.

Please help me :(

In Steam go to File->Settings.
Select the "In Game" tab.
Untick "Enable Steam Community In Game".
Click OK.
Run Game.

I've had the same problem dood.

EDIT: Thanks google.

I just googled your issue and someone on another forum seems to have the same issue. Try doing the following...apparently it worked for him:

In steam go to File->Settings

Select the "In Game" tab

untick "Enable Steam Community In Game"

Click OK

Run Game

{EDIT: Haha, that's hilarious. We both found the same exact thing on the same site. Nice!}

Verify game files.
If not try the Steam forums for Half Life 2.

There's yer problem right there!

Ok, that wasn't very helpful, I'll try again.

Besides making sure you've updated all your video/sound drivers to the latest edition your best bet is to hit Valve tech support pages.

Go into Steam and in the top left open Help > Technical Support page.
Now type in the exact error you get into the search bar on the left and follow the instructions from there.
For that error I got this: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9416-WUCV-4502
