I can't trust pre-orders anymore

Depends on the series and it depends on the developer. I preordered Revelations because I loved the other AC games and I want to see this series through to its conclusion. I also pre-order Valve games because even though I was never a HUGE fan of theirs, I trust that their product will be unique and at least a worthwhile experience to have.

I'm always wary though. I loved Bioshock and the sequel was the BIGGEST disappointment. So you can't always trust that a series will continue to be decent, let alone good.

I preorder anything that I think looks good, usually totally worth it. I only have a problem every once in a while with games I Preordered.

Now a days I only pre-order a game if I see gameplay footage of it and consider it good, Dead Island for example I have found to have quite enjoyable gameplay footage and looked and played out like I thought it would. Now a game like Gears of War 3 you would've needed to have played the previous two installments of the series to be able to enjoy and understand how and what's going on in this game; maybe you should research your games more before you blindly pre-order them next time and you won't be as disappointed.

I think youre right. I stopped with pre-orders a long time ago when heavily hyped games were turning out to be really bad ones. There really is no reason to do pre-orders anyway. If they were cheaper then what they would be launch day then I might consider it. Spending $60 for a game and knowing nothing about it before hand is a bit of a risk. For people who dont have a lot of disposable income its a significant risk.

I only pre-order if I know the game will be good or its a sequel to a game I loved. Like for instance I will be pre-ordering both Skyrim and Mass Effect 3, mostly because I want them right away.

Other than that, only if there is a pre-order bonus. Pokemon Silver I got a cool little figure with it.

So really for me, it just depends on the game or the bonus.

I preordered Dungeon Siege 3 and Alice. Read reviews on DS3, cancelled, but purchased Alice. Beat it twice, it's one of the most memorable gaming experiences I've had recently. Traded it in with a few other games (after 100%ing it, I had no reason to keep it) to pick up DS3. Paid 5 bucks for the game, and it's not too bad, but nowhere near worth the $60 preorder price.

I'll be picking up War in the North solely based on my obsession with all things middle-earth, as I can look past crap gameplay for (almost) any new chance to play in Tolkein's world, and I have high hopes for Dead Island... but I'll definitely wait a few days on that one, or at least until I can read some reviews.

There's no point unless you get something special for pre-ordering. It's not like stock is going to run out.

I was in EB Games the other day and some kids were pre ordering Skyrim. I was thinking, "WHY!". You can get it on release day from Big W for $40 less. Or even $40 less at EB because they match prices.

And these days you should read lots of reviews before purchasing anyway.

If I really want something, I preorder from a website where they don't take the money until they ship the product.

And it doesn't cost any extra.

I rarely preorder anymore. I used to do it all the time, throwing $60 at a product that hasn't even been reviewed yet is risky. The only thing I will probably preorder this year is Uncharted 3. It is the only game coming out that I am willing to pay $60 for on the day it launches, and am not worried about reviews because I know it will be good. Battlefield 3 I may preorder, I don't know yet.

As for the other games you haven't even installed yet... why haven't you?
You misunderstand... my fault: I played them, thought they were shit and simply valued the HDD space more.

As for L4D2, I still play it. I just didn't think it was worth full price.

I pre-ordered Saint's Row 3 before they had the special pre-order edition available. The non-preorder edition got removed from the place I ordered from. That canceled my preorder, but the store sent me an apology email and a code for money off the preorder edition.
So it's worked out pretty good for me lately.

If you pre-order not researching the game it's really only your decision. I pretty much preorder majority of games i buy and never get disappointed, just because i generally do not buy things i'm not sure about.

If i have even slightest feeling i might not really enjoy the game i will not pre order and not even buy it on day 1. I will wait to see the actual reviews, to see some gameplay videos, if i still am not sure i will wait for it to hit the bargain bin. I'm not in hurry in that regard, don't need to have games right away as they get released, got plenty to play if i am bored.

I get the feeling a lot of complaining about quality of games and wasted money comes from gamers being way too trigger happy customers. It's new, it's fresh, it got hyped - you have to buys it! Just be an aware buyer, saves money and frustration.

Was going to preorder BF3 (on steam) but now that it is exclusive to Origin, i won't. I will have nothing to do with Origin, and seeing that they are CHARGING for preorders for the new star wars RPG, fuck EA. I will buy a hard copy. and i better not have to install Origin to play BF3.

on topic, to date ive only preordered one game which was CoDBO. I was genuinely excited for it pre release, but that game finally burned me out on the series, i decided ive bought and played CoD4 enough times, i will never buy CoD again.

I have never really needed to preorder. ive always just walked into Gamestop on release day, asked forr the game i wanted, and always got one with the bonuses packed with it. This was back when i had a 360, ( sold it) now im gaming on my laptop, and so far all my games have been bought through Steam, BF3 will be my first Hard copy PC game purchase in many years.

I don't like pre-ordering as I don't have that much spare money lying around. I like to read reviews, get opinions of people who have played and then make a decision.

Also, sales help...and buying used.

Hey, I'm cheap.

I preorder most games I'm looking forward to.
Haven't done it for Earth Defence Force since it's so close to release.
Games I've bought have rarely disappointed me since I'm not into most hyped up games.

Just preordered Skyrim today from GameStop. I'll also be preordering Halo Anniversary and Assassin's Creed Revelations soon too. Honestly, I feel like it's worth it for the bonuses you get and for the joy of playing the game on release day.

On an off note, if you liked Fallout 3, why the heck don't you like New Vegas? They're nearly the exact same game, with New Vegas having a better story and better DLC, and Fallout 3 having better gameplay if only because Fallout 3's skill challenges are actual challenges and not just checks like in New Vegas.

EDIT:

There's no way you managed to do this, since you can't get a game from GameStop on release day without a preorder. I've tried, believe me I've tried and they will not let you do it.

I learned not to buy games on a whim. I picked up bayonetta the first day it came out (on my birthday none the less) that game was great and knew it would be as it was a flashier devil may cry but the same day darksiders came out.. only knew the premise and figured.. screw it.. and snapped it up too.. didn't get the same run from the love child of link and arthus that i'de of hoped and haven't bought a launch game day sense.. wait for it to be cheaper or at least research for a bit to make sure it's good.
