I collect dice . . . STFU!

I realize this may not mean much to people who don't play pen-and-paper roleplaying games, but I have encountered a behavior pattern that drives me insane.

Someone will say something to me like 'I collect dice.' And they have sitting in front of them at the gaming table, some Crown Royal bag with some bric-et-brac dice they purchased at a convention because Chessex's staff that years was giving them the hard sell.

And all I can think is is "No. STFU. You do not 'collect dice.' Is there a room in your house dedicated dice? Can you speak with authority about dice composition materials or rolling surfaces? Does it stick in your craw that your favorite casino dropped one die manufacturer for another and are now stocking *gasp* peasant solids? Are there dice in your collection you can't roll because they'd evaporate under the strain, so old and fragile are they? Do you know what tali is? Have you ever played it? Is there a gap on your shelf, where your favorite manufacturer issued limited edition pearlescent finish gold-leaf pip commemorative dice for an event that you couldn't go to because your leg was broken and you were laid up in the hospital? Does that gap madden you, because no one else knows what the hell you're talking about when you ask them, hope in your eyes, if they might have any leads on other collectors who might fill this gap? DOES ANY OF THAT APPLY TO YOU?

"If not, STFU. You do not collect dice. You buy dice you like. Stop using words you don't know the meaning of."

But I don't say anything. Because I'm 'polite.'

No... You stop using words you don't know the meaning of!

Collector(n): A person or thing that collects.
Collect(v): To accumulate; To make a collection of.
Collection(n): A group of objects accumulated in one location

In no place does the definition specify an amount(of said object or knowledge of said object). You simply need to accumulate something to be a collector. I have a collection of about a hundred metal bottle caps in a jar, but I don't even know what beverage most of them came from. I still collect bottle caps nonetheless.

This has to be one of the oddest rants I've ever seen on the Escapist, so congrats for that I suppose OP. On the topic itself though I agree with US, there's nothing saying a collector has to be super-obsessive and all-knowledgeable about what they collect and so perhaps you should consider checking up on the meaning of words before berating others for using them.

Because it was relevant to the topic.
I collect books, yet I do not need to know how to make one or when Steve Guttenberg invented it.

See? This is why being polite is a good thing. If the OPP had been impolite, he would have made himself "Douchecanoe of the Year" in less than thirty seconds!

I have two tickets to shows from years ago that I refuse to throw away. By most any definition, this makes me a "collector". Deal with it.

I can relate I have several thousand of (I don't know precisely what they're called) the part of a soda can used as a lever to open it, I have at least 3,000 of them accumulated over several years in a paper bag in a drawer, I don't know when it started or why...but it never stopped lol

Dice are so cool and pretty! Why wouldn't you want to collect them?!

Such a devoted collector, and yet he's overlooked the fact that dice is plural.

I have different colored dice for each 40k army I own...it really helps make bringing the stuff to the table that much more awesome.

I also have my handy D&D weapons. They may be purple, but they've served me faithfully for over a decade now.

I... Don't see where he needs "die."

Anyway, everyone has a degree of their enjoyment with a(n) [series of] object(s). It's understandable that it might drive you insane because someone collecting the same object as you is not as knowledgable, but everyone also has their own reasons for enjoying the object they are collecting. You can still be a collector while being casual about it.

There's two lighters in my coat pocket that I picked up from various locations because I liked the print. Sorry to say, but that officially qualifies me as a collector of lighters. Dedication has no impact whatsoever on a definition.

My thoughts, too. It seems like the "hardcore vs casual" and "fake geek" things rolled into one.

Definitely Hardcore v Casual/Poser. The whole "fake geek" thing is another version. Don't know if it is satire though. He could honestly be so insecure within himself that he feels the need to prove his devotion to dice is a much greater thing.

To the OP: personally, my advice would be to do your thing and stop worrying about everyone else. Their casual affair with dice in no way cheapens your own love of the multifaceted chunks of plastic, bone, metal, wood, etc...

Um, if you have lots of items and say it's a collection, then you collect them. Simple as. If you have only a few items, guess what, you can still be a collector, there are no rules here.

I collect bottle caps, sort of as a Fallout joke initially, but there are some cool ones.

Do you have an old wedge shaped d4? No, then you are not a real dice collector.
