Personally, it doesn't seem like THAT big a deal, I just don't think Suzuki is currently aware of the problems surrounding crowdfunding right now. I've been a a huge Shenmue fan ever since I got the first game on its release date, but I still didn't give a ton of money (although I could have) to it because I wasn't 100% on the crowdfunding model. At the same time, this is kind of stating the obvious. Since early on (maybe not on day one, but eh) Suzuki had stated that the original $2mil goal would only be good enough for a very bare-bones game, and the stretch goals have been very well defined beyond that. Reopening crowdfunding and saying "more money would be nice" doesn't really indicate much that hasn't already been indicated.
I thought his comments were actually quite encouraging at least in one aspect, Shenmue III does NOT need to be a heavily graphics-focused game. The first games were beautiful and their graphics still largely hold up today, all you really have to do is clean up the textures for HD and it's good to go. Hearing that he wants to focus much more on gameplay is quite encouraging.
