How the hell is the idea of releasing a new iphone almost every year with no big difference between them, charging $300 (not adding in most of the crappy add on's and services) for it and some how still stay in business and make huge profit. I am not trashing the iphone i just don't get how apple markets it this way and some how gets return profits. am i missing something here

Apple appeals to the special snow flake demographic, those with the obsession of having the very latest tech.

Doesn't matter that it's overpriced and made out of milk cartons and gum :D

That's not to say everyone who buys Apple products are in that demographic, but it certainly makes up a large portion of their market.

Because they have the best marketing in the business. They levels they go to maintain secrecy causes people to go into a frenzy and the hype is massive. Not to mention things like the iPhone adverts 'If you don't have an iPhone well, you don't have an iPhone'. It's saying you NEED this phone and you're a nobody without it.

Plus they just make genuinely good products. They're overpriced sure but their designs from an aesthetic standpoint are almost unparalleled IMO and they're slick machines that work well.

The "retina" (urgh... kill me) screen was a pretty good innovation and made the iPhone 4 stand out against the rest of the market due to the sheer clarity from the high pixel density.
DAT PPI. I've got a 4S and the screen is amazing. When I first got it I almost couldn't believe I was actually looking at a phone screen. I don't know what I'm gonna do when I'm due an upgrade, I can't go back now :D

They have incredible marketing. That's the base of it; though the other side of it is the people who are obsessed with having every apple logo'd piece of plastic on the market. Though, I imagine most or at least half just think an Apple logo means quality.

I don't actually own anything Apple, just because a PC with Linux on it is a far better value and I really don't want to bother using proprietary software/formats. I'm looking at you, Microsoft, Apple, and AutoDesk.

As well as the marketing and user friendliness, if you look at their release dates of their products you'll see that they are very very good at releasing their products when the market for them is just opening up and growing.

This is true for the Ipod, Iphone, and Ipad, released after other companies had trail blazed the idea, but just as the product was getting known through word of mouth, then Apple comes out with their shiny, sleek, easy to use and reliable product that gets advertised everywhere you look as the new must have gadget, securing it's market dominance in that area.

It's a brand name thing. Kind of like how people pay ungodly amounts of money for designer fashion.
