I don't quite get why people hate Halo

I guess it's all about "fanboyism." If you are a die-hard fan of Gears of War, like my friend who hates anything Halo or Call of Duty, you will most likely believe the game you like will always be better. He didn't even try out Halo, yet he believes the Halo series is the "anti-christ" if the shooter genre (he did use the term). Oh well, you can't change the beliefs of people and just have to sit back, take a sip of cola, and laugh as they bicker among themselves about why their game is better.

It was ok, but the overhype and people treating it like it was a gift from god brought it from ok to crap game because I was expecting it to be the greatest thing ever... and... well, meh...

One reason is that it's popular to hate on it.

I mentioned this in another similar thread, but even my sister hates Halo. And she doesn't even own a gaming system.

Other than that I don't get the disproportionate hate. Perhaps because it's an exclusive?

I liked it just fine. I just picked up ODST, finally, since I enjoyed the multiplayer and the co-op campaign of Halo 3. I wouldn't say I loooved it or anything, but it is a fun game.

As for gameplay, it's awesome. No weapon is the same as the other and all got fulfilling jobs and tactics.

How is that not fun? To anyone?

I find myself asking the same thing, OP.
we'll I respectfully disagree with your opinion for two reasons:
1. I don't suck at Halo
and

I think it's bad not terrible not good just below average, but I hate the series for what it did to fps genre as a whole and that is basically create a standard for which u can make money. I mean for a while there it looked like fps' could go anywhere because the original standard(being Doom) is only slightly more technically advanced then a piece of graph paper and really only set the standard of there being guns and stuff to shoot. to me it seemed that before Halo came out fps was really a genre to experiment with story telling, concept and gamplay encompassing RPG, platforming, and cinematic elements that can turn out very well done and original ideas that both take huge leaps for the genre and medium as a whole by making an interactive intelligent experience that appeals to both adults and children being both fun and philosophical but then Halo came along and somehow became extremely popular and cutting out well told story and intelligent hybrid gameplay for straight forward FPS gameplay that really set the medium back both in the eyes of the media and in my heart because of it's simply badly written story and cookie cutter characters. now if Halo was PC exclusive it would have been easily overlooked because PC gamers had gotten over this kind of game by the Quake 2 era and have been spoiled by games like Deus Ex, System Shock and Half Life all of which had better stories better gameplay and actually brought something new to the table. Halo on the other hand toned down the intelligence and the complexity in term making it accessible to the console gamer and basically saying if u wanna make money just half-ass it and release it on a console, who needs a good well written story, experimental gameplay ideas or enticing weapons that make gameplay that much more enjoyable and strategic we have multi-player and were making money. and multi-player is arguably the only thing Halo brought to the genre, Arguably that is because in my opinion it's just a load of crap it's been done before and better even on consoles look at Golden Eye. but even so no matter how much I complain it won't change the past so whatever for all intents and purposes Halo is bad not horrible put still puzzles me on how it became the behemoth that it did.
Oh yeah and just one more thing regenerating health is utter bullshit I know health bars aren't exactly realistic but it's still more so than getting shot in the chest 12 times and being fine as long as u hide in a corner for a couple seconds...

I always thought of Halo as a rather fun game. Yeah its single player sucked but they started that tradition around Halo 2, but the multiplayer is one of the best I know. Certianly better than the COD or MW series or whatever it likes to be called now. At least Halo had some diversity in its gametypes and they actually felt different and each were fun in its own way. And the maps are very open and the multiplayer lets you drive around in vehicles and destroy everything in your path including yourself in often hilarious ways. I just dont get why people hate Halo so much. Can anyone clue me in on why?
I don't hate Halo, I just find it generic and dull. I also find it interesting how many people enjoy it and idolize it when there have always been far more compelling FPS games out there.

Possibly because people like you OP, start threads about Halo that are supremely done to death, and everyone is sick of hearing about Halo.

I like Halo, but hearing about it every fucking day that I choose to visit a gaming forums makes me resent it.

Shut up about it.

Yet, the game play is almost similar to the other works of FPS; You shoot people.

And for me, the best FPS are the ones that includes the most fun in doing so, as it's the original purpose (most of the times).

What goes for the story... I have to say, Halo got one of the worst story lines.
But what it gives you, no matter how you look at character development and story, it gives many numerous platforms for battle and several missions that got the means of just shootin' them up. And sometimes, with vehicles.

As for me, a good story is good, but not entirely necessary.
Just give me a gun that's original, well-thought and mighty, than point me to where my enemies are.
And that's often how all missions turns out anyways, what ever FPS game you are playing on campaign/story.

With that, I favor Halo as one of my favorite FPSes, following by Gears of War.
Gears of War got no fun vehicles to go willy-nilly with (in multiplayer), but it got chainsaws attached to their machine guns.

Now that's FPS to ya!

PS: As goes for realism, I'd like to quote a game developer whose name I have misplaced.
"Realism is bullshit. Two bullets in the body than down is not entertaining"

Because the story could have been good if they told it in the source material and it is the catalyst in the creation of the near universally loathed Xbox LIVE drone.

I'm just sick of being bombarded by praises & antipraises of games I've never played & never intend to. The other games I'm sick of reading about is WoW. Fans shove that game in your face like bible salesmen.

Mostly because of the community. I can barely stand the Bad Company 2 community and at least you can't hear a full server of people. I also found the game extremely boring. I don't hate it, I just don't get it. I especially don't understand the fact that it is being milked to death. I mean, there are Halo games, board games, books, toys, clothing lines, movies... there's just too much.

It's pretty simple why people hate Halo so much. They don't understand how anyone can like it so much.

I don't hate Halo, I don't like it but I certainly don't hate it. Fact is I really don't care enough about it to hate it. It was bland, dull, and reduced FPSing back to run'n'gun which it had finally started growing out of on the PC.

What did annoy me, though, was being called a PC Elitist by shrill XBoxers for not agreeing with them that Halo was the best game in the history of entertainment. I do admit to trashing Halo back in the day just to get a rise out of them. Their hypersensitivity toward criticism of Halo pretty much demanded this, not as a PC Elitist but as a misanthropic arsehole.

People hate it either because they don't like it, or feel like joining the Crowd. Honestly, the best thing to do is follow the words of wisdom from a Movie I've never seen
And move on.
For reasons why I don't like Halo Threads, please look up the term Flaming, as Threads such as these tend to breed Flame Wars of some sort.
You must see that film.

Generic. Boring. Bland plot, which was completely ruined after the second game. Repetitive boring online play with no rewards.

After the second game the series just degraded in quality.

Oh and console exclusive shooters are retarded.
Why are console shooters retarded?? They're just as much fun as PC shooters.

As for the online play with no rewards, I would be of the opinion that this is a good thing. New players have a reasonable chance to do well early on, unlike in MW2 where you get annihalated by killstreaks for 20 something levels before you unlick stingers missiles and Cold Blooded.

Sure it's repetitive, but that could be argued of any online shooter.

I have to say I was a little underwhelmed by Halo 3 when I first played it at release. It was my first introduction to the series and I was expecting something mind blowing, but instead I got a fun, technically sound shooter with some bright colours and a great soundtrack.

And funnily enough, it's one of those rare games that's gotten more fun with each playthrough. No idea why.

I don't get why everyone uses the reactionary retort "they hate it because it's popular" on this forum.

Sure, there are reasons to like Halo, but more than enough reasons to dislike it, too, and none of those reasons involved popularity for me.

It seems to be a standard fanboy response to harp on someone hating the popularity of a game even when that someone has already laid out the actual reasons the game is dissatisfying. In a way, I'd say that that's some form of elitism by itself.
