I don't quite get why people hate Halo

Halo isn't bad, but it isn't good either.
Its mediocre. Well, its a above mediocre, but it doesn't deserve the acclaim attached to it.
Its a good game that's way too popular for what it is.

It was ok, but the overhype and people treating it like it was a gift from god brought it from ok to crap game because I was expecting it to be the greatest thing ever... and... well, meh...
I have to say I was a little underwhelmed by Halo 3 when I first played it at release. It was my first introduction to the series and I was expecting something mind blowing, but instead I got a fun, technically sound shooter with some bright colours and a great soundtrack.

And funnily enough, it's one of those rare games that's gotten more fun with each playthrough. No idea why.
I'm the opposite there... Halo 1 I never finished due to it's stupidity at one part of the campaign. Halo 2 I finished, but it has zero replay value. Halo 3... well... I played it once at a Halo night type thing (figure it would be more fun to play games with other people than to sit around my house alone and play them), and we were all pretty bored of Halo 3 after an hour or two...
I'm guessing the 'one part of the campaign' was the library level?

I almost quit the game during that monstrosity of a level but ended up ploughing through it eventually.
Yep... after fighting the same enemies through the same hallways for about an hour, I just quit...
Yeah it was pretty awful game design. Just like the Flood level in Halo 3. I really hope there's no Flood in Reach.

Mostly because it's mainstream and hating it has become a fad of sorts. Personally, I think that coupled with the books it makes up the greatest game series of all time.
I think so too

Do people still hate on Halo?
Is Halo overrated?
Why do people like Halo still?
Why is Modern Warfare 2 hated so much?
Why do people still play Modern Warfare 2

Here's my question: Why aren't these fucking threads a bannable offense yet? Everytime I look in the Gaming Discussion forum, half the threads on the front page are the same retarded questions being asked over and over and over. I'm just going to start reporting them and hope the mods agree that this shit needs to stop.

I dont think anyone truly hates Halo, They just hate it for its popularity. Halo is the legendary first person shooter because Halo Combat Evolved was the game that set the standerd for all console shooters.
Swing and a miss. As far as setting the standard for console shooters the award goes to .... Goldeneye!

But yes it did improve on the formula.
And now there is a pretty standard formula.

I actually can't stand Halo, but not because it's popular or what not.
I can't stand it for it's single player, its story, I don't like the weapons, etc.
Plus I don't play many games online, especially over XBL so there's no reason for me to own it or play it.
That said I don't own COD either, though I think its a better game and have enjoyed it splitscreen at a friend's house on more than one occasion. I can't say the same for Halo.

I guess I prefer FPS on PC mostly. As far as these console versions go, they didn't really add anything all that innovative that Unreal Tournament didn't have, so I have trouble seeing them as being that big a deal.

That's just my opinion anyway, but I do see why some people like Halo. The gameplay is not bad and its got a big online community.
But I also don't have a hard time seeing why people hate it, because in all honesty I find the game to be pretty average.
*sigh*
Why yes Goldeneye was a great game and made a lot of people start to like first person shooters but it still had its flaws.(Although I am still waiting for the remake. They have remade almost everything but Goldeneye).
Anyway Halo CE defined future FPS's by making you to be able to hold only two guns at a time(remember those games where you could fit an entire arsenal in your pocket), Made throughing grenades its own button(before this you selected a grenade by scrolling down your list of weapons untill you reached grenades).
Halo CE also had an amazing story line(the other stories were not so good).
I doubt Rare will ever get the licensing to remake Goldeneye but here's hoping.
Besides, every game has its flaw, including Halo.
As far as being able to hold only two guns and making a button for grenades, I would hardly call that revolutionary seeing as how not every FPS follows that mentality, and not every one should.
Besides, it would have been pretty close to impossible on the N64 controller to have made grenades its own button since every button was already mapped.
I understand the 2 gun thing because they are going for "realism" but its also a game about aliens and super steroid space marines so there you go.

Like I said, just my opinion, and I see why people like it, and I know a lot of games rip off its ideas, but aside from implimenting a great online multiplayer system I don't agree with the term "revolutionary".
Well Rare did already remake the banjo-kazooie games so I guess I thought Goldeneye would be the next but it probibly wont happen.
Also I am sorry if my previous quote seemed offencive I didnt mean to be rude.
It's all right no need to apologize, its very easy for these thread to turn into flame wars and I probably wasn't being that polite either.

As for a Goldeneye remake that would be awesome, but I think the reason they chose to do a Perfect Dark Remake on the XBLA instead of Goldeneye was due to licensing issues if I'm not mistaken.
Thanks for understanding.
I think the best we will get of Goldeneye is a version being put on the Wii shop channel.
But to get back on topic I think most people hate Halo is because of the people who play it. I went online today to test it. After 5 matches that I won because of my friends, I was going to talk to the enemy team. 3 of the 5 times before I could even say anything, members of the enemy team were screaming at us calling us newbs and hackers in annoying high pitched voices that were obviously kids who were not old enuff to play M rated games. 1 other time the entire enemy team quit instantly and sent me and my friends threatining and hatefull messages. But the other time we met a nice group of people who said "good game" and talked about the things we did during the game.

That sounds pretty awful. I don't play FPS' online on consoles anymore for that reason. XBL has ruined it for everyone :D
Come to think of it I think the only game I play online is Starcraft so there you go.

It does suck how the immature hateful people have taken over the community though. Ruins it for people who just want to enjoy the game.

For me, I don't hate Halo. I find it to be a fun and entertaining game.
It's just that there are hundreds of other games that are so much better.
This happens with alot of things.

I made a thread like this when I was new to the Escapist. It got locked and the mods wouldn't give me an explanation. I know sort of get why people discourage Halo threads but I don't agree with locking them without an explanation.

I mostly hate it because it is always hailed like the best game since Sliced Bread Simulator. Yes, it's a fairly solid shooter. Yes, it has a decent community. Yes, there's many versions.

But it's not the best in the world, which is the problem. The plot is derivative, the mechanics are fairly standard, and the game changes little between versions.

It's really not that bad of a game. But it's not fantastic. And this is the problem. Much like thinks like Avatar, which sucked but was thrown so heavily into advertisement that it will never fade away, I always hope that something will come along as fast as possible to overshadow it into obscurity. If it was just an obscure shooter that ran quickly from the spotlight, I really wouldn't hate it. But since it's such a massively popular, mediocre game, I detest it as I detest Avatar. Not living up to the standards it was put on to the point of utter hate.

I truly hate Halo. For many, many reasons that don't involve it's popularity.

But, I will start it off with this. It could have been worse and most of my complaints are more concept related. Even if I loathe the shield system and every single gun in the game that belongs to the Covenant. Which is sad considering those are really their only creatively designed weapons.

Since I'm aggressively tired, I'll keep it down to my two biggest complaints.

We'll begin with the Covenant. While I like the doberman sort, the rest of the models look silly and disjointed as if they were created for a children's show that aimed to be unrealistic. Between the Covenant speaking fluent English and the ridiculous appearances they have, they manage to destroy the automatic interest I have about the inclusion of aliens.

Master Chief is by no means likeable. I've never been a fan of one person army sort of trains no matter how special he is as a Spartan or the only Spartan or the only competent Spartan. So that right there is enough to drive me up a wall without mentioning his complete lack of personality. I don't understand why we don't get to see his face. The fact that he's not a silent protaganist cuts the ribbon which holds us to immersion so if we can't pretend we are Master Chief then at least give us his face. If anything, it would give me an idea of what to daydream about blugeoning with his smug helmet. But I digress, it's quite obvious that I am not a fan.

On a lighter note, I did enjoy ODST a little. The soundtrack was solid and the exclusion of Master Chief pleased me. It had a nice dark atmosphere that I tend to prefer. But maybe that's the main reason I don't care for Halo in general. It's far too bright (far too many luminance terms for one paragraph) and colourful.

In short, aesthetics are a moral imperative.

Quoted for truth.

Besides that, some people say it had a bad influence. But that is simply how it works. Halo didn't have a bad influence, it's simply a lack of creativity that exists in every artistic industry ever: something comes out that is, at the time, a definitive experience of its genre, and everyone wants to copy off it. You can't blame Star Wars for all the elements later sci-fi movies ripped off it, you can't blame Shakespeare for all the elements modern storytelling borrows from his plays, and you can't blame Halo for all the games that try to make themselves clones of it.

Fact is, it's a better game for it. Just because a bunch of later games screwed up trying to copy it doesn't mean Halo is a bad game: in fact, if anything, it speaks of its quality.

Out of curiosity -- since when has it been cool to hate Halo, mate? The majority treats the franchise like it's their own personal Jesus and anyone who protests be damned.

This next bit isn't directed at you, Thaius.

I would like to also argue against the idea that people hate it because they oppose mainstream items. Certainly, I am not the only one who embraces the mainstream because most things are popular for a reason. Then again. What do I know. Maybe the Escapist holds the world record for anti-Haloites.
