Funnily enough for me the first time I played Diablo I hated it. Then I replayed it around 15 or 16 and liked it more...

Come to think of it I also really didn't like Star Wars Unleashed and Star Wars Episode III (the Game) the first time.

Prince of Persia: Sands of TIme.

I played it with a friend on his console back in 2003 when it came out. Found it pretty boring.

Recently noticed it on Steam for $10. "Oh hey, that's that game that Yahtzee is always praising to high heaven, let's have a look". Enjoyed it immensely. $10 well spent.

I'm pretty sure the reason for my liking it so much more the second time around is because I actually payed attention the characters and dialog and whatnot.

This - The main thing is that in Part 1 it was actually slightly challenging sometimes, rather than you being the ultimate noble harbinger of death with oversized shoulders and a bad taste in clothing, even for the period.
You forgot the ability to dive into water from giant towers without dying, or the ability to hide under bridges to avoid chasing guards...
It was nice not to be water soluble. But I still much preferred the level structure in AC1, it felt sort of like Mega Man... you know from the beginning - there are 9 baddies to kill.. and each level allowed you to get to know your target before the big reveal.. and every target had something profound and confusing (at the moment) to say. AC2 didn't seem to have any of that.

However, it was a much more solid gamePLAY experience.

you can actually hear the dialogue in the PC version? my PS2 version I never could hear it. Even turning the volume up to max the music would always drown out the voices entirely.

Its even better when you hide from the guards who you were just trying to kill buy standing in a group of 3 people and spinning in circles.

I recently replayed Tales of Symphonia after playing at least 2 years ago. When I beat it that's what went through my mind. "Wow, I remember it being good but not this good!" In fact it's probably become my favorite game now (but that's for another discussion).

So Escapists, were there ever times where you played a game and enjoyed it, and then played it again after a while and enjoyed it even more? What game was it and what do you think made it so good that second time around?

For me it was because when I originally played it I didn't understand everything as well as I did this time. I wish I had forgotten more things though because that ruined some of the surprises.
The exact same thing happened to me, me and my friend bought the new ToS to the wii and when we were trough with that one we thought, I remember the first one was better, he called the next day and said he had borrowed it from a friend so we co-op:ed it and it was really great!!

PC version has that problem too. But it was never so bad that I couldn't hear what they were saying.

I use headphones. That probably helped.

For me it's a mostly unknown game called "Liero" Played it on the first comp i had several years ago. Now I played it a month ago and found it to be tons of fun. Although it is a fan made game and has no story. The only thing to compare it to is Worms.

Half Life 2 never hit my spark until around the time I started playing it again. I went through Water Hazard, and it was really boring. Then I went to Ravenholm.

Not a game, but I got Snow White and the Seven Dwarves on Blu-Ray because my Dad won a trivia competition at an improv thing. That night me, him, my brother and a friend watched it, and I enjoyed it on a much higher level than the one I repeatedly enjoyed it when I was a child.

Um. Actually I meant I liked the first game a lot more the second time I played it. Not that the second is a lot better. (It is but that's not what I was talking about).

Yes. With the exact same game...huh?

I replayed Symphonia just a week ago. I enjoyed it very much. It's both challenging and a positive narrative experience, more so, than I remember being it during my first playthrough a year ago. The only difference is, that it IS my no.1 game.
Uh... yeah, this. I picked up my Gamecube a little while ago for lack of anything better to do, and went "Huh. I never finished ToS all those years ago. I don't even think I ever got through the first disc." Next thing I know, I'm addicted. It's definitely on my top few games.

Apparently ToS is just one of those games...

EDIT- whoops, didn't read the OP.

OT: Other than multi-player games, nothing comes to mind. I guess I just enjoy the discovery of my first time playing a game more than "knowing what to do" on a next playthrough.

Super Mario Galaxy. It was good the first time, but when I replayed it recently I realized how fucking incredible it really is.

First Time playing X-COM: "God why are all my soldiers pansies who die if an alien so much as glances at them, panics if SOMEONE ELSE gets shot, miss 70% of the time, and even if they do hit hardly put a scratch on them. Also, why do the aliens get rockets that turn corners, lasers, and mind control when all I get are pistols and rifles.

Second Time playing X-COM: "Hey, I'm actually getting the hang of this now, it's pretty tough but with enough planning I think I might stand a chance".

Third Time playing X-COM: "*Laharl voice* HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA, cower before my awesome power alien scum! Flee in terror as my tanks with freaking laser beams bear down upon you, scream in agony as plasma devours your flesh, lament your inadequacy as my squad of physics rips your feeble minds apart! What's that? You've blockaded the door to your ship? FUCK YOUR DOOR!!! *blows the entire ship to pieces with blaster launchers*".

What? Getting my ass kicked repeatedly sucked okay? They had it coming...

Well, not a game, but an album. First time I got The Resistance by Muse, I played it in the background as I was playing some RTS game, and I barely listened to it. Afterwards, I couldn't remember anything from it, and sort of convinced myself that it was no good, so I didn't listen to it for about 6 months. Then, stuck in Canada about a week ago, nothing to do, on a four-hour drive, I was listening to Muse and figured, why the fuck not. I almost eargasmed, and thought, 'What is this I don't even? How did I miss this the first time?', proceeding to listen to the album for the rest of the journey*. My status as a Muse fan, which I didn't even recognise until I realised I had all of their albums, and a couple of them twice, cannot be called into question, as the next big journey was a 7-hour trip, in which I listened to nothing else but Muse.

*in which I didn't stop believing that there would be a rest-stop soon, because otherwise it would mean kidney explosion. As we rode up the mystery mountain on a saturday nite, that belief, the belief I kept so faithfully, kept me going all the way. **

**See how many Journey songs you can find! Yes, I know this post is about Muse, but two guesses as to what I'm listening to now?

I played the very first God of War many years ago. I'm replaying the collection now and enjoying every bit of it. Especially after the way the storyline went in the following games, I really feel that out of the main trilogy, the first God of War had the most satisfying ending.
Hah I'm glad that you liked the ending of GOW one. Did you enjoy having to fight your clones after fighting Ares? It was near impossible on God Mode. I played it on the GoW Collection also and I don't understand why there is no save point between the Ares battle and the battle of the clones. If I quit I'd have to fight Ares again. :(
