Since the announcement of Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, I've been um'ing and ar'ing about buying a DS and the HeartGold (as I had Gold back in the day).

The main problem i'm having is I don't get all this DS lingo. These DSIs and DSXLs. It all means nothing to mean (probably cause me being more of a console and PC gamer now, I don't pay attention all this hand-held shizz).

Can anyone explain it all to me? And can you also basically tell which one would be the best to buy for my needs (Probs use it for HeartGold and that's it. Man I sound like I've got money to throw around lol. I don't really. This'll be a savings account raid.)

Hope y'all can help.... me catch 'em all? [small]No, just no[/small]

I wasn't sure if this was gaming discussion or off topic. I decided gaming. Feel free to move this if i'm wrong [small]If youre a mod that is[/small]

Well if it's just for those two games, the original ds won't go too far wrong I reckon. The newer ones are all for cameras and downloads and stuff I think. The oldest model has backwards compatability too. It's old school.

The originals are also as bulky as fuck and in my opinion awkward to play. They are also stuck in that shitty gray colour, I think. If I were you I would pick up a DS Lite. Nothing really flash but it's cheap, looks good (you can pick the colours), feels good in your hands and you can play GBA games on it. The ones after it are filled with gadgets and gizmos that I think anyone with a phone doesn't need.

If you have an interest in using your DS to play GBA games, get a Lite. Otherwise, the DSi is the superior option.

I'm thinking Lite so far. GBA backwards compatibility sounds good (although i was uber retro with gold and got it for GBC :p)

I got a DS Lite, and I am perfectly happy with it! :D

(I have no need for useless cameras and weak game downloads!)

You can get them in blue as well, and I think red also.

It doesn't play anything older than GBA. So Pokemon Gold won't work.

But DS Lite.

I would go with the DSlite but then, I've never had the chance to mess around on an original DS. I have yet to play with a DSiXL or whatever ... my DSi works fine for me and I am happy with that ... and my DSlite ... which I already use to trade pokemon between cartidges ...

Yeah, you can get the originals in red, like mine. With some awesome flame decals that came with the Mario Kart DS package.

...What? Fire makes it go faster!

OT: An original style DS Phat isn't as bright as a DS Lite, a tad heavier, and has a shorter battery life, but the sound quality is superior. Also has a tiny stylus.

A DS Lite is lighter, brighter, longer battery life, but with an inferior sound quality.

A DSi forgoes the GBA slot for a camera, onboard memory, and access to the DSiWare store.

DSiXL is just a larger DSi with the same resolution spread over a larger screen, and is marketed to people with poor eyesight (like the elderly). Wouldn't have come about normally, but people in Japan were pushing for a larger one to come out, and this is what we got.

DS2 is, as of yet, unknown.

My opinion? It's all what you want. If you're an audiophile, go with the Dinosaur DS. If you like good battery life and a clear, backlit picture, go DS Lite. If you want Internet access and a camera, go DSi.

DS Lite (My personal favourite) has GB backwards compatibility.

DSi Has two pointless cameras and bigger screens, no backwards compatibility, web browser and DS store.

DSi XL Is just a bigger and even more pointless version of the DSi.

I say go with the DS Lite, just because it's cheaper and has all the vital functionality of the "better" ones.

Get the DS lite, still bacwards compatible and also aesthetically pleasing. The original looks far too bulky and clumsy.

I just got a Duel Screen Light (to spell it out for ya), and I think it's great! You can play Gameboy Advanced games on it, as well as whatever DS game there might be. If you also want to be able to play older Gameboy games on it, I'd recommend just getting the Gameboy Advanced. But if it's a DS you're looking for, the DS Light is a good way to go.

You don't need a camera on every single piece of technology! Just because it's a hand-held piece of electronic equipment, doesn't mean it has to be all in one (a phone, internet compatible, a camera, music player, game player, and a stapler).

just get an emulator on your PC.

if you're concerned about the legality of it, there are sites where you can download games for a price.

And if you're concerned about the touch screen, the emulators are designed to get around that... in one way or another.
I can't imagine those paysites are legal themselves.

And have you really tried DS emulation? it's a crapshoot. None of the emulators are any good. You need an R4 and a DS to actually use the roms.

in any case though, speaking DS isn't hard. DSI is a premium DS with no GBA slot (so no Guitar Hero and several other peripherel games that used it.) It's also got a camera on it for some ungodly reason.

The DSXL is just an extra Large DS (well, extra large screens). If I had my others, this is the one I'd pick, just because I think the DS could use bigger screens. I'm not too sure if it's stateside atm, but it could be.

The DS Lite is a smaller DS (same sized screens). It has a GBA Port (I'm unsure about the DSXL without looking). It's also probably the cheapest and has the best battery life then any of the other models.

The standard DS isn't bad, but you can't really buy it new anymore, Battery has a severe memory to it, so you need to know how to treat it if you want it to maintain a charge for more then a couple hours on the go (Rule of thumb: Let it bottom out, then charge it to full, and DON'T overcharge. If you fuck up and charge it for a month, you'll get a 10 minute charge and will have to spend another week or so reteaching the battery some manners). It'll be the cheapest model you can get Used, but you won't find too many new ones, at least in retail stores.

The DSI is the only DS SKU that has games specifically made for it, but they mostly just are gimmicky camera based games and can safely be avoided.
