So, like the title says my laptop fell off of my sofa, only about two feet or so. It was on at the time, and worked for a few minutes after the fall. Then it froze up. Now it won't load up windows. I get the Dell loading screen, then it goes to black, then three minutes later I get some weird blue error screen with stuff I don't understand. Something about basesrv or system32 can't be found.

I know that I need to call tech support. I also know that there are tons of intelligent and tech savvy people here that might have some insight.

Anyone else ever drop a laptop so I don't feel like such an idiot.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was on an airplane once, and put my laptop with the other bags up on the shelf.

Then before I can get it down, some fucking asshole goes to drag out his bag and throws mine away.

It landed on my head.

Ass-hat was what he was.

It too stopped working after that. I had to turn it in.

I think what has happened is the hard drive has been knocked out of place.

Or perhaps the MoBo.

I'd leave it to a pro, you need to crack that fucker open, and laptops are very hard to fix by yourself.
So do you think I souldn't even try to open up the case and look inside. I woudlnt really know what I was looking at anyways, but maybe something would seem out of place?

Thanks for the help by the way. I had an idea that you would be first to respond ;)

I once dropped my laptop while the disc drive was open and cracked the drive...
Now it doesn't go in properly without me having to wiggle it about to get it in the right place- it also only works if I press it together from the top and the bottom while it's trying to read discs. It also makes a horrible whirring noise, not nice.
(Yes, I do know there's a 'that's what she said' joke there)

About your lappy, not good mate, I can't really suggest anything other than call the tech support.

I am now using my fujitsu.... which retracts all important shit when it detects a fall. I haven't dropped it yet but my laptop is smart enough to save itself, yay. If your clumsy like me pay the extra for the shock sensor utility.

I tripped over my charging cord because it was wrapped around the chair I was sitting in. Laptop fell off my couch and crashed, but luckily was fine after that. Coincidentally, my laptop is also a Dell...

As it has already been said bring it to a professional you don't want to risk doing more damage to it.

If its under warrenty don't touch it. You'll get fucked if you open the case they can refuse to fix it for free as "your" tampering could be what broke it.

Good point. I never thought about that. I need to call Dell Asap. Damn them and their cheap, in all aspects, laptops.

i'm going to say the hard drive is dead, you probly need a new hard drive.

it can read some of the drive, ie the mbr, however after that it can't find anything else on the drive

He didn't say anything about a blue-screen...oh, wait, he did.
Youz must remove the operating system. Then bring it back. It will most likely wipe your entire hard-drive.
IT HAPPENED TO ME!!!!! ÖÖÖÖÖ

Yeah. More often than not even opening the case will break some sort of seal, and you can say bye bye to your warranty :(

I don't get why everyone doesn't like Dell I mean yeah they were bad, But they've really turned round in quality and price. I LIKE DELL. There I said it. *hides in shame*
I did too until this happened. Sure its my fault but I wished it was just a little bit stronger to account for how dense I am at times.

Open it up and make sure all the pieces are attached nicely, something probably fell out of place (RAM or motherboard).

If all else fails try hacking the mainframe in your server DLL and that will get the cookies to come out in PNGs.

turn it off.

unplug it

Unbattery it

hold power button down for 5 minutes(your finger will hurt if you're doing it right)

Worked on a friend's HP.

And I've dropped my Dell from 3 feet onto concrete and it was open at the time it fell and its screen just snapped back into place for me and it's been running fine.

Can you tell me how to remove an operating system? I suck at computers, and life.

You've grown to dislike a company because you dropped it while the Hard disks were on? That's like hating Audi's because you was driving one while drunk once and crashed. o_O
