Being a poor bastard for the better part of 8 months put's a serious handicap on my music buying abilities. But today I found out that my brother has brought the album I seek, but is currently living elsewhere, so I can't iTunes the disc. Being the cunning fellow that I am I think "I could download it!"
After spending twenty minutes figuring out how to download music, I find myself unable to hit the "Download Torrent" button. For some reason I am unable to do it, even though (I believe) that I am doing nothing wrong seeings as I am half paying for the physical media when I scrounge up enough poo change off the ground.
The question i pose to you is this odd at all?

No, it's not weird you just have stronger morals than most other people.
That's a good thing :D

I never bought any music in my life. I haven't had any time where I've been unable to wait to get home and bring it up on youtube if I absolutely had to listen to it.
...yeah, my Dad has an extensive collection though, so maybe listening to his radio offsets that a bit. Being unable to torrent though?

You could always get someone else to do it for you? If you can't handle the guilt, blameshift it!
[sub]Yeah, I'm a terrible person.[/sub]

Yeah, pretty much my feeling on the subject as well. Not that weird that you didn't pirate something, that's a good thing! :D

I think this thread is a trap to get people to admit to piracy so they can get a warning. I pay for all my music and games, I have a lot of music.

Well, that seems stupid to me.

I'd guess that on some level you believe the law is more important than your own sense of right and wrong... either that or you're honestly scared of being caught and facing some obscene fine or whatever. Regardless, I think it's a silly decision to make.

There's this drug called Viagra. It would be off label use, but it might help your problem.
I don't get it. Was that a joke?
Clearly you've never seen an ED commercial.
A what now? An advert for ethics and diversity!? :S

OT: I don't pirate either... I once pirated a game that I owned, and still had the disc for... because I couldn't install it on Vista... The box said it needed windows 95/98 and I couldn't load it in any compatability mode or anything! Eventually I found a site to download it off... and still felt bad! :/

On the other hand I have over 500 CD's and 300 DVD's that I have legally bought over the years! And my iPod has over 16,000 tunes when you add all of my legal downloads!
I will admit that I have shared music with freinds though, and I don't know where they got it from, and haven't asked... but I am sure they got it from other people before them too! :S

Okay, I must admit, it is a strange day when Daleks start to complement people on their strong morals. I mean soulless, evil beings have no morals.

So, um take this opinion with a grain of salt, I guess.....

lol :p

But no seriously, I am in the same boat, many people I know torrent just about everything, and yet I want no part of it. I have even gone to the store and bought the same album twice because something happened to the first copy, when simple pirating would have been much easier.

I can't do it either, I have to really want a song, I make a little bit of money doing 5 dollar commission drawings via paypal and I usually blow that money on indie games/music.

But I can't pirate-torrent, I have to be desperate and needing it for a higher purpose other than just 'entertaining' myself.

Usually if I torrent it's because I already own the software, and it's just...more convenient to get the download than go to the storage where my old discs are and get it...

There is a simple way around this:
Youtube.
Videos are legally on that site to be viewed, and often its just an AMV of some sort that's just music with a video you really don't need to watch, though they can be entertaining.
From there, you could test if you're ok with downloading Youtube videos to MP4 format via third part programs. Not sure if there's anything illegal about it, but I'm not entirely sure. IMO its a free Youtube video so its fair game, but W/E.

Hah, well when I was younger I sometimes downloaded music. At the time it didn't even occur to me that this could be a good or bad thing, it was just where "everyone else" got their music. Then I started to buy CDs because I enjoyed seeing my collection grow. Later I learned about this whole "piracy" thing, and I decided I wouldn't be a part of that.

I've only once pirated a game. This was Lucas Arts Outlaws. Before pirating it I searched everywhere I could think of, trying to buy this game. It is one of my best memories from my early gaming life, and I'd gladly pay the full $60 that a new bigshot game cost these days to get it in it's original form! In the end I became desperate and ended up finding a torrent for it... Still a great game <3.

Other than this I'm not a fan of piracy and pirates, and I don't wish to take part in it.

Except that's a load of crap. By saying that, you're implying that all pirates are immoral. Being immoral means doing something you know is wrong. Many pirates don't think what they're doing is wrong. They have different morals. By saying that it all comes down to morality, you're invalidating any value of discussing the issue because hey, pirates are immoral and evil, why should be listen to anything they have to say?

The OP said himself that he doesn't think it would be wrong for him to do it in this case, since he's already payed for the music. So obviously his morals say that there's nothing wrong. And yet he "can't do it". Maybe you're brainwashed, OP?

Absolutely loving the angry rants guys keep it up!
Except for you Spartan1362, you're absolutely right I probably should have wrote different instead of stronger, it just felt like the better term to me in that frame of mind...
All I said was that he had stronger morals, deep down he knew it was wrong and so he didn't download the song even though he paid/half paid for it, I'm not rambling about BLUH PIRACY IS BAD BLUH, just that his morals dictate how he reacts more than other people. Some would definitely screw morality if they got some kind of personal gain in exchange.
No need to start an argument.

Hell, I don't pirate stuff either. Mainly because I just cant be bothered to do so. If it takes any kind of effort to do stuff on the internet then I wont go near it. Going on a site and downloading shit? Nuh uh.

To be fair though, if there is something that I really want, then I will go and buy it. I like physical copies of things. Even if it just gives me the illusion of ownership (as the big game publishers will have us believe) then I'm happy to pay money. In terms of music, theres only 2 bands I am serious enough about to splash the cash out on anyway. So thats one CD every other year?
