So, I got laid off today, or at least I may as well have. I worked at a newspaper as an assistant editor, and money just got too tight. I never made much, honestly. I mostly just had the job so I could put it on my resume. It didn't seem like any big deal at first. At least I have more time for school now. And yet as time went on I kept dwelling on the little things like how the owner didn't even bother to do it himself (Not unreasonable since I see him everyday and he employs only about 8 people). But now I just feel terrible. Terrible enough to commit that ultimate of all sins and say something on the internet.

And now to cleverly disguise my whining and moaning as an actual thread, have any other Escapists been laid off?

I started reading your thread title, and was about to say congratulations, but then I saw the last two words.
On Topic: I haven't, but a friend has. Of course, that was after he left the state unannounced, for an extended period of time...

My time at a job ended a few years ago thanks to the recession. I've known the MD for almost 15 years now so when he had to do it he told me face to face. It wasn't as if he wanted to do it though and you could tell how distressed the company's financial situation was making him. In the end the physical company, an independent trader that had lasted over 60 years, was forced to become an online only affair because they couldn't even afford the overheads. I ended up feeling more sorry for him than myself.

Sorry to hear that! I spent years training in the military, only to fail a single course (for aptitude reasons, that the selection process was meant to show) and then was discharged because there was no scope to retrade, due to the economic climate...

Upshot is that I was now 2 years (add the 2 years it took as the application process) on from school, with nothing but a pass at basic military training, and a Commission, that isn't recognised in civvi street... at the same age where everyone else my age applying for jobs had degrees...

My response.. After failing to get a job in civvi street (and hating the concept of each one I applied for) I find the Military Reserves. I then, as a stroke of luck end up with a full time role, and now am full time military again... as a reservist... Worked out pretty well! :p

Indeed. From a newspaper, funnily enough!

I'd raise a glass to you whilst I drain my sorrows, but I can't afford to any more! Q_Q

Not laid off exactly. More I hated my job so much that I pissed the boss off until she fired me. And ya know what. It was a relief to get the hell out of there.

Kinda sorta. I was young at the time... can't remember how long ago it was. I tried getting a job at the ice cream place down the road. I managed to get the job. Went in for training... and was never called back. At all. They were interviewing someone the day I was training so I'm assuming she took my place. It wouldn't have hurt as much if they had actually told me. They never even tried to contact me to let me know I was laid off. That may not sound like much, but being so young it was an experience that really hurt me quite a bit in the long run. It's one of the (many) reasons I have low self esteem, and one of the things that's held me back from searching for better employment. That and my next few job interviews after that went... poorly to say the least.

Sorry to hear that brah... But it's unavoidable that stuff like that would happen

I got laid off a couple of times too.
Both from temporary positions as an online writer and while it stung the first time, I realized that the second time it happened, I was lagging behind and I wasn't writing on par with the rest of the staff anymore. Needless to say, I started picking up my act again, and I found a new job. Gotta warn ya though, it might take a month to get employed again.

OP I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you, here's hoping you wind up with a better job.

OT. Well the only longterm job I've ever had is has a volunteer, so I'd have to do something illegal for me to get fired. Aside from that I've only really done one off, cash in hand sort of jobs. So I've never been in a position to be laid off, so fortunately for me I've never had to go through that.

I was goinf to say the same thing . I read , " i got laid" instead of "i got laid off" .

OT: I never got fired, but a friend of mine has . He was laid off without any kind of notice , his boss basically called him one day and said don't come into work , ever. It sucks but don't dwell on it too much , it will look good on you resume ,and for ever door that closes, two more open up . Especially if you are still at school and live with your parents , it's not too bad . Remember it could always be worst. Stay optimistic and chalk it up as a life lesson.

I was hired by Blockbuster Video in August of 2009...So yeah, I guess I have been considering I was with a now dead company more or less when their disease was diagnosed as terminal. It really sucked too because I really loved that job. My co-workers were great, the hours were alright, we were one of the best stores in the district and, I could fucking walk there! Oh well, memories and whatnot.

I have! "downsizing" last one in; first one out.

Nice to be valued! I hated the job anyway. I now have the best day job I've ever had. The two months of unemployment weren't fun though! Glad I had Deus Ex 3.

I do sometimes wonder though if i DIDN'T have deus ex 3 would i have gotten a job sooner! hah!

Ive been laid off twice since September, once again its down to money issues. One was legit, one was utter bullshit.

I still fail to see how a massive tax avoiding billionaire bastard can close down stores due to "lack of funds", kiss my arse you Arcadia ****!

I've never been laid off because I have never had a job and I'm 18... It's not that I haven't tried it's just that I never even get an interview.

I worked at one of the YMCA's charity shops with five other girls, and every single one of us got laid off in July last year, with the management citing that they couldn't afford to pay us anymore and they were going to rely on volunteer workers from now on. Funnily enough, the shop is now standing empty with a great big 'To Let' sign above it...

Though, I have to say, the YMCA management in the UK are some of the nastiest, unfair people I've ever met. One manager made up an excuse to fire someone because she saw them as a threat to her job. Another manager has a network of 'spies' who watch the shops and report back if anything is amiss. Myself and another girl got a bollocking after she visited our shop, and were told if we didn't like the rules we knew where the door was. Want to know what we did wrong?

The building that our shop was in had flooded twice in the last year, and as such we didn't have any heating save for two little radiators on wheels. We also had to have the shop door open at all times, even if it's a blizzard outside. We got in trouble for wearing our coats on the shop floor, and having a cup of tea under the till counter; even though the door was wide open in the middle of February and the wind was vicious. I wasn't happy, less so for myself and more for the fact the girl on the till with me was five months pregnant and was shivering even with her coat on. The manager wouldn't take her coat off though when we mentioned it, nor would she let my friend go in the back where it was marginally warmer...

Damn... old friend of mine got kicked from the RAF after a couple of years... what for? Being allergic to one of the preservatives in the emergency rations. *eesh* He's now a commercial pilot, and loving it, so it wasn't all bad...

Still, sorry to hear that, OP. Don't know what's worse, getting kicked from your job or looking endlessly for a job and turning up shit (which is what a load of my friends are going through... :/ )
