So in looking at another thread I came across a program called speedfan that allows you to check the fan speed and internal heats of CPU, System, and individual cores. Now my PC has NEVER given me the slightest bit of trouble, So I check out my temps and see that they are in the 55C range. Im thinking OK, good. So I wanted to try to see how effective it was and cool everything down, So I put a 20 inch box fan nearby to help flow a heavier stream of air into the case. And I had my CPU/Cores down to about 45 C after a few min. So I figured, hey why not and rigged the 20 inch boxfan to blow on the PC more heavily.

Everything was going good, till I started playing Deus Ex via steam. After about an hours worth of play, the temps on the CPU/Cores polevaulted to about 85c... but the system temp was only at about 40 c. So Im stunned that a 10 year old game that shouldnt be pushing alot of the horsepower in my PC could actually effect the temps in my PC so astoundingly.

I cant help but to wonder how running Arkham Asylum or something actually graphic/resource intensive would increase the temps.

Now, honestly I had no idea the temps were going up that much. Had I not tried this program, I cant help but to think I would have went trucking along for months and never have a problem with it. But knowing about it now, makes for the first time in my PC life that im actually concerned about temps and heat in my PC.

So, What instances in your life where you would have been better off not knowing something you ended up finding out?

I was a huge fan of the Crocodile Hunter as a kid, but I drifted away from it for a couple of years. One day I stumble upon a game called 'Terry Irwin's Revenge' on a free game site. At first I was like lolwut, but then I looked it up and was like OMG sad face :(

Sounds like you need to reseat your CPU's heatsink. The paste in that is supposed to conduct heat from the spreader to the heat sink may have flowed/dried over time and thinned out or developed a breakage. Grab some Arctic Silver 5 or other high conducting paste and re-seat.

I know! I LOVE slimjims... but hearing what machine separated meat is it made it real hard to eat one.

I would except I think I will be building a whole new PC within the next month or two anyway, So I would rather not expend the energy for it as this box is likely going to be relegated to audio studio duties, VOIP connection and perhaps a rudimentary PC for a TV.

If I had confidence in building I would build the new box in one of those snazzy Mineral oil immersed PCs and eliminate heat as a factor all together, but its really not worth the money, and the lack of mobility or the reduced ease of modification.

Back on topic... Mentioned the thread to my cousin and he added "Learning about boils, lancing and the horrific odor when you do" /shudder
