Get Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex (1st Gig). You don't need to have seen any GiTS stuff before it. It's probably the best written anime out there and makes you think a lot (transhumanism is a strong theme and is the meaning of self). The action is all very believable and well-done. The only bit of fan-service is in the Major's character design, but it isn't really played-up much - you get used to it and soon realise that the world they're in is quite sexless (and various other things make it more normal).Danik93 said:...(Combat should not be "OMG HE IS THROWING PLANETS AT HIM!!!" it should be fairly "realistic"), the depressing tone of some of them (I want to be entertained not depressed), the girls voices, the girls HH cups, and some other stuff
What I like in a series: A good story that is very well written, characters is really important, humor, the setting must be good (I don't care if it's steampunk or Scifi or fantasy, etc) and lastly I want something that makes you think. (Good humor series don't need anything of the tings I have stated. As long as it's funny)
So, do you accept the challenge?
Only problem with Outlaw Star is that they changed the artists halfway through... it turns FAAAAR more generic anime halfway through, which is an awful shame as the first half is fantastic. Also the grappler fights are OTT in my book (like the OP, I'm not a massive fan of anime), and the ending is a bit odd... but still, this is well worth a look!Daystar Clarion said:Fucking Outlaw Star!
Interesting characters? Check.
Lack of annoying female voices? Check.
Humour that doesn't detract from the story? Check.
Long enough to be keep you entertained but not so long that 50% of episodes are fillers? Check (25 episodes).
Seriously, this is the first 'proper' anime I ever watched (I don't count DBZ). You won't regret it, it doesn't have an angsty, douchebag undercurrent like a lot of newer anime series.
Anime is per definition Japanese, so it ain't anime. It certainly has quite a lot of anime influences though and it too comforms to the points raised by the OP; mature storyline, mature and well-fleshed out characters (despite them being children), humour that doesn't distract (and sometimes is a vital part of the story and setting), interesting and entertaining fight choreography, avoids annoying female cliches, etc.re dir said:avatar is in a similar art style, but it was made here in the US so you might be able to relate to it more. not sure if its considered an anime or not
Well if it doesn't he's beyond hope...Belladonnah said:Someone else mentioned Welcome to the NHK. I don't think it meets his criteria tho![]()
Snap! I dare anybody to say they don't like Osaka or Sakaki... (That'd be fightin' talk!)Aptspire said:Azumanga Daioh for having the best tropes![]()
All anime art is the same so you'll have to get used to it. Well not the same, but similar.Danik93 said:So, What I dislike about anime is the art style in general
It's a slice of life, so no combat at all.the over the top action scenes (Combat should not be "OMG HE IS THROWING PLANETS AT HIM!!!" it should be fairly "realistic"),
NHK is pretty depressing at times, but it does have a happy ending. It's one of those things that starts off pretty depressing then gets less depressing then more depressing as it does on.the depressing tone of some of them (I want to be entertained not depressed)
Not really much specific here, the main female character doesn't have, what I'd call an annoying voice like Misa from Death Note or Sakura from Naruto.the girls voices
Only one woman has large tits, but it isn't portrayed in a comedic or sexual way. Realistic.the girls HH cups
Yes. Unless you count that bloody annoying arc towards the end that's a few episodes long, the story is pretty well written. It's simple and touching. What I like in a series: A good story that is very well written
Check. It's a slice of life, the characters have to be important.characters is really important
I thought it was funny >.> But then again that type of humour isn't for everyone.humor
Modern day Japan. Nothing really special about it.the setting must be good (I don't care if it's steampunk or Scifi or fantasy, etc)
This is where NHK excels. It deals with issues such as suicide, social alienation, abuse, religion (more so in the novel) hell, even a little bit about the internet aswell. And if you read the novel it's based on, it also deals with drug abuse.and lastly I want something that makes you think.
It was neat! some things that annoyed me was the quick random scene changes. is it going to be like that all the way?Arisato-kun said:I hope you enjoy it. I'll make one last suggestion with Eden of the East. Yet again, watch it in English. Also, fun fact, the opening song is "Falling Down" by Oasis.Danik93 said:Bravo... that looks kinda good! I'll give it a shot!Arisato-kun said:I do and I submit Baccano! to you.

Watch "Spirited Away" or "Grave of the Fireflies".
