I can't stand anime. *Most* of the stories are quite stupid, the characters annoy me and the scripts make me cringe. A lot of their designs are awful, and it all around just lacks a lot of taste...

But I also love it? I really love the art, the beautiful stylism put into the characters, especially when it's combined with a painterly style. The eyes especially, they draw you in in a way our squinty little shadowed eyes can't. The emotion especially can be very strong.

I've dabbled in anime on and off throughout the years (I refuse to call it 'manga'... it just sounds dumb). I either can't stand drawing it or I can't stop. I've gotten quite good throughout this... And strangely enough I've found it's harder to draw anime than realism? Work that out! I guess it's harder to keep to the style and still make something that looks beautiful.

Recently I've been combining a lot of contemporary fantasy and noncontemporary fantasy, using an anime style for the faces. I've been drawing a lot of Zelda fan-art too. Zelda is incredible, it combines the cutesy anime style with some great, almost western fantasy concepts. I'm playing through Twilight Princess for the first time and it is absolutely stunning, it revolutionised the way I see fantasy, and it's strongly affected a lot of my recent work.

Okay, I'm actually just wondering if there are any other Escapist-artists out there? Have you tried an anime style before? Do you enjoy it or hate it? If so, why?

I'm still working out some of the subtleties (I'm a bit of a perfectionist...), but at the moment I really enjoy it. In fact I have a drawing of Link on my lap right now :p

I can tell by your avatar you're an anime fan. One of the only anime(s?) I ever enjoyed :)

And yeah, I call the drawing anime too... It's wierd I know, but I just don't like the word Munggaaah... And I can draw realism really well, it's just anime seems harder for some reason...

Yes, and I take offence to you saying all the stories are stupid.

It would be pronounced maangah. I think if you haven't found any good stories you have been watching the wrong anime.

I love the style, I haven't drawn much in a while. This is my last picture.
I don't colour things, because I suck at it.

Well the point with the art-style is the authenticity. If you read an American book on Drawing Manga, you still see 'The American Way'. You know, explosions, comic book covers, a womans huge... dramatic expressions.

While from Japanese artbooks you'll see it gives a bit more artistic freedom when you look closer. There are styles (look at Nippon Ichi's games or compare Shaman King with Naruto) they differ, yet keep something the same. 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. Don't look at what 'looks like it' look at what 'looks good' or 'feels good'.

In art schools you might get kicked out if you show your portfolio full of Anime and Manga arts. Because it might lack the autenticity of the Japanese arts and in the current country where you are, they might not be so easily influenced by the Eastern culture.

I tried to draw it once (I sounded like Chester A. Bum there...) and practised hard until I had something okay-ish. I dropped it because my experience with Cartoony art is better.

Practicing on the realistic stuff does increase the way you want to develop your style, no matter what it is. You might discover something usefull.

What I hate about art books teaching people to draw "manga style" is that they usually are way too restrictive when deciding what should be called "manga-style" and what shouldn't. By their logic, Ryuichi Ikegami, Junko Mizuno and Akira Hiramoto aren't drawing manga. The idea that it's only "manga" when it features big-eyed characters is a Western idea.
And like FargoDog said, the comics are manga, the cartoon shows are anime.

I actually agree on the "stupid story" part... And I hate some of the voices when they get beond squeeky, but thats the nature of almost all "cartoons" all over the world; voices sound insanely unnatural and wierd.

I love anime when it's a good one, but I just can't take all the sexual fixation that so many have! I don't need to see up some girls skirt, I know what it looks like >>. Also, I hate Mr. Bean. It's funny at times, but it's mostly so embarrasing, and thats why I just cant watch it. I dont enjoy others missery. And anime seems to LOVE embarrasing shit... I don't want to watch something I wouldn't watch with my friends without blushing! I always have a pillow close by when watching a new anime so I can put it infront of my face if it gets too awkward for one of the characters...

That said; my favorite ever anime is Black Lagoon, but I don't like Roberta and those twins cause they ruin the anime A LOT in my opinion. Would be so much better without...

You're so right. Just turn on a Swedish-language dub of a show like Flapjack or Chowder and the pain will be overwhelming.

Thanks. Yeah, my own design, she's a martial arts master, ripping knights and armoured opponents to pieces with her own hands. Can't hit her with a sword if you don't have the sword... and your face is caved in.

I enjoy a good Anime every now and thena s long as it sticks to 1 season or a movie or two. However, I'm not into the whole fandom thing. This past weekend I was working at a stand at "Desucon" where about 700 animefans were attending. I didn't feel like I was part of it at all.

It's kind of a generalisation really.
Manga refers to all graphic novels released here in Japan, there are absoloutely tonnes, and the stuff available ranges through almost every genre and style imaginable. The same with the anime. There are shows of every genre, drawn in every style.
So while you say you hate the stories and such, it's like saying I hate live action films because they're stupid, or books because they're boring, you're encompassing a whole medium into your statement. Whatever the things are you dislike in some anime, if you look I imagine you will be able to find other anime which has everything you do like.
