You're not the first to lament that, and you won't be last. Whenever my whiny whiteness takes over I just listen to this:

And then I feel all better. ;)

Not in the slightest, I refuse to feel guilty about things that happened before my great granddad was so much as a sperm cell. I didn't do it, why should I feel guilty? What wrong have I committed? Having the same melanin levels of some people who did bad things? Being born in the same country as them centuries later? Piss off.

British by the way, in case anyone asks.
This pretty much sums up my viewpoint, with a minor addition.

There's a lot of diversity in our history just like any other culture's history. My ancestors were poor Irish peasants and poor Slovak peasants, my family was too poor to own slaves, too weak to go on crusades, and too stupid to invent the weapons of mass destruction that we see today. I take pride in being who I am because I know that my family had improved their station since the last century.

I think that the problem is that we have so much guilt directed toward us that we forget two very important things:
1.) Being bad and hurting others isn't a 'white' thing, it's a human thing. Everyone has had their share of destruction and stealing so blaming us for being human is like blaming grey squirrels for stealing all of the nuts when it's inherent to all squirrels.
2.) Most of the destruction and pain cause was caused by very very few people at the very tippy-top of the social ladder. I would bet that your ancestors were like mine: poor, ignorant, weak little peasants who kept their mouths shut for hundreds of years and never hurt a fly (I don't mean to insult you if you know for certain that you came from royalty, if you did though you really shouldn't be posting here, you should be out living the high life right now...).
3.) I know, living in America, there's a lot of blame focused on people of European descent. Our education system focuses much more on the horrible things that slave owners did to their slaves than on focusing on the actual Civil War, the cause for the end of slavery in our country. I'm not saying that we didn't do our fair share of stupid, hateful things, we did have slavery and racism. We had those things because we were human, not perfect.

You can feel however you want to feel, I just think you're being a bit short-sighted if you think that we have been the only bad people in the world.
I can't say I know much about my families history but your probably right, the Cooley's have lived in and around Manchester (North West of England, mostly working class) and we sure as hell haven't been in the money so don't worry, no offence taken.

Although after all this I think I will try and learn more about my ancestors. Who knows maybe I'll be the rightfull Duke of Somewhere-shire or something.

((Forward: I'm not flame bating, I'm not trolling...This a a real opinion that I carry in my mind. I've seen some really good debates about race and culture here. I thought I'd bring my own feelings to the table.))

I do. I hate it. I hate that North American white culture is so shallow and stupid. I hate that my very existence represents all the horrible things that were done to the superior, and noble native peoples of this land (and other amazing creeds and cultures as well). I hate that most likely my ancestors were the cause of so much pain, and suffering.

I hate my hazel eyes, my pale skin, and my blonde hair. I look at myself and i see a monster.

I've cried over this...and I still do sometimes.Hell part of my ongoing struggle with depression is my deep deep cultural, and racial guilt.

Yes yes I know 'Why is she saying all of this?' but what I want to know is...Am I alone in feeling this way? is anyone else as hurt and sad as I am about being white?

Also, well, what can I do to bring myself out of this? Can I bring myself out of this?

Should I?

You're turn...
You are not resposible for any of the actions of the people of the same race that came before you.

You are responsible for your own actions.

If anyone is trying to push this RACIAL GUILT on you, It would be best to either A) avoid them for they are toxic cretins, or B) Confront them by asking them to point out exactly how you are responsible for any of racial crimes.

If their response starts out with "Because the White man did so and so", congratulations, you have met a retarded asshole that will do nothing but spout baseless retoric.

Individuals committed terrible acts based on their beliefs and thought process. Just because they were the same color as you means absolutely fucking nothing.

Yeah, our ancestors were complete dicks and mistreated others based on melanin levels. They also crafted the modern world. Also, name one culture that didn't do anything that was completely wrong and horrible. Just because they fucked up/people over, doesn't mean you're their reincarnation.

Also, all races are cosmetically different. At heart, were all homosapiens. If one of us does something, the entire species is liable.

Also...Stop being such a little *****!

Accept the genes you've been given! If someone reminds you that "your race" did something horrible, ask them when we began calling it homo-whitey.

Lets face it; every race/ethnic group around the world has done a huge amount of atrocities. The British Empire started concentration camps (Second Boer War), the Japanese have several famous torture tecniques (not sure how you spell that), and Muslims and Serbs caused havoc in Bosnia. (Believe it or not, the Muslims were as bad as the Serbs- If you want a good account of that, read Lt Col. Tim Spicers "An Unorthodox Soldier"). The African Zulu tribe sacrificed and enslaved huge amounts of innocents.

Overall, we're all as bad as each other. (As races/ethnic groups- some individuals were beyond nasty)

Best moment between my friend and our teacher.

Friend - "So MIT didn't accept me..."

Teacher - "You're a great kid, so it's their loss, but to be honest, if you really wanted to go to MIT, you probably should have tried being more, I don't know, Black, Asian, Crippled, or Gay."

I think you sound like a whiny asshole. I think you're a fucking moron for thinking your in any way responsible for anything just because you're white. I think anyone who thinks anyone is responsible for anything based purely on the color of their skin or nationality or anything so fucking superficial is a moron. I think you need to suck it up and stop pitying yourself for something that doesn't matter one fucking bit to anyone who matters one fucking bit. I think you need to stop concerning yourself with what you look like and where you come from and start concerning yourself with who you are and what you're going to do. I think that you need to stop complaining because want to hear something? No one wants to hear it. Especially when you're complaining about something this stupid.

That's what i think you should do.

i've heard of sins of the farther but never it being self inflicted before. Your ancestors were arseholes not because of hazel eyes (which incidentaly have nothing to do with culture the racial superiority color is blue see mein kemph) but because of natural instincts and the extended self preservation instinct that is present in all humans don't like it then accept it and move on.Be proud of your perspective you have realized that these people are good now realize it in yourself. Also white European culture is rich complex and brilliant and has the interesting point that it was all internally built an Africans christian beliefs stem from an external Spanish source while European culture was internal and was influenced by its own progress (industrial revolution development of Christianity and philosophy ect). the white European culture is interesting and diverse as are all cultures but doesn't have the exoticism of other cultures. although america does seem to be going tits up if the republicans get in

If you hate the racism of the past stop caring so fucking much about race or you are the problem more than anyone else.
That's about it.

As long as you personally haven't done anything bad, I don't see what the issue is. Yeah, you ancestors may have done some less-than-great stuff, but you aren't them.

Dude we don't get to choose our race nor get we get to choose when or where to be born. I agree what everyone else have be saying, take some pride and deal with it!
I mean seriously there have been some good people from histories just like any other races and there are still there as any other people so don't dismiss the race as a whole!

So someone with the same skin color has done something bad years ago and you feel guilty for it? So guilty that it brings you to tears.. No offence but this is stupid, just get on with your life and worry about bad things that you have actually done yourself.
