For those of you experiencing shaky WiFi connections:

Half the problem is Windows.

Try this [http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php]

If you know what you're doing, you can bypass the retarded settings that come with Windows and dramatically decrease ping and increase stability.

If you don't, click optimize and it should help a little.

Also, if your router is trying to renew your connection every few minutes, increase your lease time.

Most routers will go up to at least a week, others will go to any set date (just put in 10 years in the future and you'll be fine), and still others allow a permanent lease (this is static DHCP, if you don't know how to use it, learn).

For OP, try various connections.

As we can see, your local connection is excellent, however try California, Ontario, Alberta, Japan, China, Russia, Great Britain, Central Europe, Africa, and South America.

If you notice a big drop (or increase in ping) anywhere (especially if it 'continues' in that direction), then there is likely a problem with a server along the way.

If you believe it to be nearby, contact your ISP and ask them if they are aware of the issue and when (or if) a fix is expected.

If you're having problems a fair distance away, there's nothing you can do, unfortunately.

Also, yes, before anyone asks, I can verify that Windows is half the problem - I have an Intel Mac, and I often get the exact same symptoms you describe when I'm running the Windows side, but never on the Mac side.

I assume that you connect via a wireless signal. How far away are you from your signal's source? Are there walls in the way? If so what are the walls made of?
The router is 15-20feet away in a straight line. My closet and a wall is in the way.

No, we handle supplies. Food, shampoo, more food, beds, more food. The only live animals we have are crickets, and even they classify as reptile food.

My wireless internet connection sucks too, but that it because my router sucks. It doesn't even have an antenna thing; it's just a box. I need a more expensive one.

I saw somebody say they had a G router in an earlier post. Can someone explain the difference between the types, and which one is the best?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11
(scroll down to protocols)

Basically g,b,n, ect. are improvements on the wireless protocol, and they support faster data speeds, ect. N is the best.
-

Keep in mind that having a faster router will not speed up your internet, that depends on your connection speed (unless you have an extremely old router and extremely fast internet, and your router can't keep up with your connection speed).

-

I've got one of these;
http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=530
It's an "n" router.
Wow, your router looks amazing compared to mine.

I have a D-link as well, but there is no antenna while yours has THREE! I gotta buy an N router...

I think my router is pretty old because somebosy gave it to me, and I've never seen any other routers with no antenna. If I so much as touch my router, it can dramatically lower my connection on my wireless computer, and my PS3.

I don't know if it will help my download and upload speeds, but they seem fine on my "wired" computer. I just want to make it better on my wireless stuff.

I would consider you lucky, seeing as how you're upload speed is almost as fast as my download speed, and your ping is about 30 lower than mine lol.

Generally you go to the router's configuration page. Login and there should be an option to change the lease time for all your connections. It will probably be setup for either hours of minutes, just put in a good time length, I use around 24 hours.

If this doesn't work or you can't figure it out let me know what brand & model router you have and I'll work on getting you an answer.

I get short bursts of lag when I use the "Windows Zero Configuration" that is with Windows, If I disable this and just use my Belkin wireless software it works flawless.

Maybe use your wireless adapters own software if your not already?
+1 for this guy.

The intermittent increases in ping for a short period has nothing to do with poor internet connection and everything to do with WZC Windows Zero Configuration. MS won;t admit their is an issue with this but WZC will go looking for a stronger connection every so often and if it finds one it will try to connect during which time you get your lag spike. Disable WZC in the services menu, type 'services.msc' in to run and hit enter scroll down right click and hit disable.

You then want to install the software that came with your wireless receiver, not the router. Use that to set up your wireless connection, make sure that the software doesn't use or support WZC as some do, if it does it should have an option to disable it.

You can also try a few other things to id potential problems

Open a command prompt window and type

'tracert www.domainname.com' where domainname is the webaddress of a site you want to try. This will give you a listing of the ping times and hops need to get to the site. Have a look and see if any of the ping times look high or out of place. Now of specific interest is the second line. This will be your intial connection to your isp. This line will contain the 'pipe' that your connected too and your closest exchange as well as the IP address. You may have the option of connection to a different 'pipe' this could improve your speed as line faults can sometimes mean you get your speeds slowed down to make the connection more reliable. You can connect to a different 'pipe' by disconnection your router from your wall socket, turn it off, leave it a few moments and then reconnect. You'll then need to tracert again to see if you have been assigned to a different 'pipe'.

If your connection has been slowed due to poor line quality then you would have to do the same thing as above but you will need to leave your router off over night and then reconnect. This should reset the speed but it will take a few hours for it sort out your final speed and of course it's no guarantee that it will improve things.

Oh and my connection speed

One problem with that. My parents computer, which is the one that manages the router, is broken and they are still waiting for one from Dell (I tried to convince them to let me build it for them and save some money). Anyway, I can't adjust it until they get their new one which isn't until the end of the month

Any computer on the network should be able to manage the router, at least thats how it worked with all of mine. Just go to whatever IP address the router is at and try to log on.

Do a speed test on speedtest.net. If the numbers are low, then it's probably your internet provider. Also, are you using WiFi? WiFi always has lag because it has to refresh the connection every few minutes.
thats strange... i haven't noticed a bit of lag with my wifi. and i'm downstairs in the basement. granted i don't play top of the line games online...

Neither do I, unless CS 1.6 and Battlefield Heroes count as "top of the line"
