I'm reposting a thread I made earlier in the advice section, which seems to be garnering no attention.

Mods: Sorry for breaking any rules/offending/bringing about the end of the world etc.

I'll try to keep this reasonably short.

I was playing my PS3 about fifteen minutes ago, and right in the middle of loading something in Skyrim, the screen starting going nuts with multi-colored lines shooting across it vertically. I left it for a bit to see if anything else would happen, and of course, it stayed the same.

My first thought was to find out if it's my PS3, the TV, or the cable connecting the two.

I turned the TV on and off, and it was the same screwed up loading screen, so I tried pressing the power button on the PS3 and it wouldn't respond.

So I yanked the power cord out of the wall socket and let it sit for a minute, and plugged it back in and turned it on.

Once I turned it on, the screen stayed blank, showing that little bouncing bubble that says "No Signal". I was able to eject and insert the Skyrim disc, but the screen stayed blank, and the thing still wouldn't respond to me pressing the power button.

It's now sitting on it's side with everything unplugged.

Anybody got any ideas? I've had the thing for about four years and would REALLY hate to have to spend money on a new machine. If it does come down to that, I should still be able to salvage the HDD, right? I don't know a whole lot about electronics and computers etc., but it doesn't sound like a hard disk problem.

EDIT: After letting it sit for about an hour, I plugged everything back in and it turned on normally and worked alright for about a minute, after that it did the screen freak out thing again. The only difference this time is that the power button actually worked in turning it off.

Seriously, if anybody knows anything about this, please share. Even if it's just to tell me that I'm screwed, at least I'd know not to spend any more time on this.

Oh how you are right.

Stick one of these Babies in it [http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&q=ATI-Radeon-6950-2GB&gs_upl=1032l1032l0l1641l1l1l0l0l0l0l0l0ll0l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&biw=1680&bih=890&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=7242809363044710125&sa=X&ei=FMXrTtagM5SU8gOav8CNCg&ved=0CDMQ8gIwAQ], have 4 Gigs of Ram, Quad Core 2.6GHz CPU, 1900x1200 monitor. You suddenly realize your console is a piece shit.

Your likely screwed, though type it into Google rather than the escapist and see the results.

I should have seen that one coming... bravo

Seriously though, I need some feedback. I don't want to have to spend a ton of money on something if I don't have to.

Your PS3 is FUBAR. Almost certainly a hardware fault, and possibly a power supply-related one.

First thingd be to check if it's still in warranty, either so you can return it to the store for replacement or refund, or return to the manufacturers for service/replacement. If not, then it looks like a new PS3 should be top of your Christmas list.

Or, you know, an Xbox 360.

Feel your pain man, my 4yo fat 80g PS3 YLoD on me the other week, eating up Black Ops (I know, that's good, hurr hurr, good job I had two copies, eh?)

I know it can be easy to fix and shit, but I'm not confident enough to and cba. I now have a lovely new 320 to go with my other 120 (which is also gonna be replaced soon)

first couple of comments and already computer elitists flooding in...and comments down a 360 elitist...yeah the right answer has already been posted.. its most likely a hardware fault and if you have warranty call it in and get a new one if you dont have warranty its still cheaper to send it in to get it fixed then to buy a gaming pc.

and before anyone quote me about how pc's are in fact superior i know they are. some people like me choose to base things on stuff other than hardware i find shooters terrible at pc because the precision control is too damn much (though tf2 is extremely good.) i dont care about graphics compared to gameplay. platformers are needlessly hard with the precision control (ironic)rts are far better on them rpg's are far better on them. i plan on getting skyrim for the pc on top of my ps3 for mods.
