I'm sure this may have been discussed to death already, but i think losing is done wrong in modern day gaming. There are usually only 2 options - you win and become the big damn hero or you lose and get to try again. What about losing and going home in shame? What about losing, regrouping and hitting them when they've exposed themselves? What about negotiating a cease-fire? What about playing on as a different general in the same war? There's so much room for variety, where is it?

Well, I guess it depends on what genre you're talking about. There are MMO's that offer outcomes similar to this type of game play already.

As for most other game types, the unfortunate reality is that "losing" usually means character death. You can't regroup if you're dead, and your negotiating skills will be somewhat lacking sans pulse.

In addition, games are influenced by their past, and most games of the past had a winner and a loser. Once developers begin to realize that they can program something outside a "player vs. computer" motif they'll bring something you might like.
