So I have a question for anyone really I just want to know the answer.

I watch a lot of anime and I wanted to know if watching it on a streaming site was illegal. On top of that I'd like to know if it is something punishable by law or just unethical.

This is mostly because 1. I'm going off to college in the Fall and don't want to break the school rules and 2. I don't want to piss off comcast or any copyright holders

Thanks

I don't think it's illegal to stream and watch anime but if it's being illegally hosted then the site owner would get sued not you.

Check with your college rules first if you're that worried.

Don't Americans get Hulu without having to bother with Hotspot Shield? Just use that.

We do but they don't have the shows I tend to watch, which is why I was asking.

What sort of shows (dare I ask)?

EDIT: Oh right, anime (its late here... or early, depending on how you look at it). I would say go nuts if you really can't find it "legitimately", no one'll come down on you for it.

Sorry if it disappoints but I tend to watch currently airing anime. (I use Hulu for other shows though)

Most streamed anime isn't illegal, because either A) if you catch it on youtube then they have an entire list of companies that host their own animes, or B) it has commercials before or in the middle of the program for the company that made the anime, so it's advertisement. And even if you bump into an illegal host, you won't get in trouble (check you're colleges rules on their idea, I'm speaking legally) the site hosting it will. Morally, it's the same as watching an episode of TV on youtube.

Most of the time it's legal, but if it's illegal it's not you who the feds are coming after.
Alright thanks. I just don't want any trouble with my internet provider or school.

This.

OP, if you can't find it on Hulu, you can always type in google or bing: watch ___ episodes online. If you don't have a MAC or a premium antivirus, beware of malware. It's how I caught the last 5 episodes of Battlestar Galactica (R.I.P.). Also you can check the website of the network on which the show airs (if it's played in America at all).

When the people who have the rights to a show find the latter, they simply take the show off. I'm not aware of any prosecution. IF I AM WRONG, SOMEONE PLEASE SAY SO.

Thanks for making me laugh. And now, I must be off.
