I have a spoon problem.

A considerate co-worker forwarded this to me today:
http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/gadgets/selfstirring-mug-for-the-spoonless-186161.php

This is perfect for me, as I have a bad habit of chucking spoons into the trash - sometimes by accident, sometimes in anger. You see, ever since Splenda was introduced into the office café, I've become addicted. So - apparently - did everyone else. We started running out frequently, leaving me with harsh, bitter coffee. So I bought my own box.

The problem with this, is that I'd have to bring a spoon back to my office, to stir my cup. So then I had a dirty spoon. After awhile of no Splenda at the office coffee machine, I had a collection of spoons, and a dwindling supply of personal Splenda. So in protest, I started chucking spoons.

Evil, I know - but in the end it was only several, maybe three. Now however, I have a reputation around the office as being particularly irresponsible around flatware. *sigh*

In any event, I think this self-stirring cup may be my chance at redemption. Wish me luck.

You will only find redemption if you buy those mugs for the entire office, since we are the ones being deprived of spoons.

Yeah no, that would be expensive.

this is a funny thread. My husband and I have a regular discussion about whether to stir or not. he believes that Brownian motion takes care of making the mixture homogeneous, but i disagree, since that's too slow, and not homogeneous enough. I must stir, and preferably with a spoon.

Have you considered swizzle sticks for everyone? ;-)

Your husband is one of those poor fools that finds a big pile of sugar in the bottom of his empty cup isn't he.

Scientifically speaking, by the time the dispersion of the sugar took place, the temperature of the solution would have decreased, reducing the saturation point of the sugar in the water and (depending on how much sugar/coffee you add) causing precipitation of said solutes.

It is hence my recommendation that you stir.

Rather than buying a spoonless mug (apart from the cool factor of course) why don't you just keep a bag of several hundred plastic spoons in your office? then it doesn't matter if you throw them out, and you could easily replenish your supply when it runs out for much less than the cost of replacing AA batteries.

Well, it matters if you're concerned with generating waste and using a finite resource. :p

I agree about the rest of it, though. Stirring++. However, my recommendation is that rather than bringing the coffee to the Splenda, you bring the Splenda to the coffee -- take a packet with you when you go to the coffee machine, stir it there, and leave the spoon.

I refuse to drink out of a fucking self-stirring mug with a built-in jet engine for the same reason I'd never use a bidet. Too many things could go wrong man.
Amen.

I fear I'm one of the most unhygenic people out there, when I run out of spoons, I use pencils.

And that is a pretty cool video but uh, what happens to the magnet while you drink?

Saw a video of this a long while ago, though you've reminded me to continue my search for one, cause it's fucking bad ass.

A single metal stirring rod, cleaned via napkin, stored with your pens. The trick is to make a slurry of a small amount of the coffee and splenda first, and then fill the mug the rest of the way. That way the stirring rod has very little exposure to the mixture, is then cleaned immediately thereafter, and can conveniently sit alongside all of your other small rod shaped objects.

That's what I'd suggest, were someone to want a way to avoid a spoon or disposable spoons.

You can always get a cup with a lid and do it martini style, altho the heat might pop it mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Splenda likes to float thus it needs stirring, sugar likes to sink thus...it needs stirring..unless of course the liquid is boiling...even then I dun like sugary lumps so I stir it 0-o

BTW has the splenda bubble popped yet?(besides random headaches while drinking stuff with it its over all better than Saccharine which gives me headaches every time I drink it)

You know, I just can't bring myself to drink coffee with artificial sweeteners. I've switched to diet sodas completely, but I just can't do it for coffee. I don't like anything messing with my coffee.

And all the thoughts about when to add sugar and not - the coffee set up at work makes things difficult. We have one of those auto-coffee machines where you put in the packet, the machine sputters for about 40 seconds, and then you have coffee. Can put sugar in first, though.
