I have things to say about DMC 5. Most of it is kinda bad.

TL;DR of the few hours of gameplay I had with this, and based on further experiences my brother had with it, I can say we are both disappointed.

1. I dislike the fact that once again we are playing a whole adventure switching and playing between characters other then Dante. I feel like it dilutes the gameplay combat because now I have to wrap my head around how to play each character, when really they should design the whole game around only Dante. Who asked for Nero to come back?

2. Speaking of Nero, I feel here he kinda plays a bit worse then he did in DMC 4 and because of the new mechanic his is given, the Robot arms called Devil Breakers which gives you combat abilities like a shockwave, a jumping air attack, or a homing missile and they are all very powerful. The issue is these things are expandable while being valueable at the sametime. The robot arms break if he get hit by an enemy as you are using it or if you press a certain button that detonates it creating an AOE attack that throws off enemies. The point is there are as expendable as the weapons you use in Breath of the Wild. And the worse thing is you cannot switch between the different arms in combat, so you are stuck with that one certain arm unless you destroy it to use the next in line one.

3. I don't know whether this has always been the case in the series, but I feel this is the most button mashy combat Devil May Cry has ever been. 2 of Dante's new weapons are so overpowered that all you have to do is just keep pressing the button over and over again so you can keep performing this continuous attack that goes on and on. And don't get me started on the new playable character V and how he fights.

4. From what I have seen from this game so far, I am not a fan of its environmental art design because it all just looks and feels boring and unmemorable. Its all just featureless city streets, building hallways, ruins, and bland looking demon worlds. I mean I find Devil May Cry 1 the best game in terms of the locations you go into because it felt gothic and dark, like a Castlevania game. Here I don't even know where we are enough to care. Heck even the graphics weren't as special despite the fact this is running on the RE engine. And I feel like this could have been on the Xbox 360 if I didn't know.

5. Demon/Monster designs are also lame looking, the new ones anyway, but although they brought back monsters from the older games that I feel were more memorable like the Scissor wielding Grim Reaper/Wraiths, and the Shadow Cats, no puppets as far as I know.

6. And so far I am not as invested in the story because lets just say they try to pull of Reservoir Dogs/Pulp Fiction style of pacing where the story cuts to various point in the timeline. Its not all in chronological order.

7. Dante still plays like he did in DMC 4, which annoys me because why do we have to switch between the 4 stances of Gunslinger, Swordmaster, Trickster , and Royal Guard? You think they would streamline Dante's moveset at this point to give us the most versatile Dante yet. I mean I was playing this game thinking it had a block button like Ninja Gaiden and God of War, but no.

8. SO MANY LOADING SCREENS!!! LONG ONES AT THAT. IT IS 2019, AND WE ARE STILL SUFFERING SHIT THAT HAS PLAGUED GAMING SINCE 2001!!! Its not Sonic 06 level of bad, but still, its annoying.

In the end I was kinda disappointed. And that's only of the 5 hours I put into this game.

I couldn't disagree with you more on most of these points.

I really enjoy Nero and V. I was actually surprised by how much I actually enjoy V. It feels weird to have a summoner in a character action game, but they pull it off pretty well and make it fun. Who asked for Nero to come back? I did. His sword moveset is SOOOO much bigger and more versatile than Dante's. Red Queen is literally the best sword weapon Devil May Cry has ever had, and I'm glad Nero's in this game.

You complain about the Devil Breakers, because they break, but them breaking has never been a big deal for me. They're laying around EVERYWHERE in Nero's sections. It's very rare for me to not be fully stocked on them. You also get a checkpoint before every boss where you can restock on exactly the ones that you like the most so you have full control of what moveset you want to use during the boss encounters. If you don't like a particular breaker then just don't pick it up, there will be another one in 50 feet.

First you complain about Nero being in the game and how you only want to play Dante, and then you complain about the style switching and say that you want to only play with one style? It's literally the thing that defines Dante's play style since DMC3, and is the entire reason that his gameplay is as versatile as it is. You want a block button? Use royal guard.

I'd say my view of the art design is mixed. I actually like the enemy designs and the fact that they fit together better than before. They have a more universal aesthetic to them so it doesn't feel like they just pulled a bunch of enemies from a bunch of different games and stuck them together. That also creates some problems though, because at a glace I can have trouble distinguishing enemies. Stick some Baphomets next to some Riots and I'll have a bit of trouble keeping track of where each individual enemy is. I also agree that for the moment I haven't been wowed by the environment. There's a couple of cool looking areas, but for the most part the levels don't feel very distinct from one another. DMC3 had a somewhat similar problem with climbing the Temen-ni-gru because a lot of the interiors of it look samey.

I agree with not really enjoying the flash-back/flash-foward storytelling.

Also, what is the point of the online in this game? It feels like such a waste of resources for nothing.

1. I dont mind the character switching, but I can see how that can be annoying. Plenty of people asked Nero to comeback; me included. And the ones that didn't were more appreciative when Donte first hit the scene in 2010.

2. I sorta disagree with you on this one. Nero plays better than he does in 4, but I do wish you switch devil breakers though.

3. Trust me, on later missions in DH, and your full SoS and DMD playthrough, you can't button mash. Especially against certain enemies will get you killed fast.

4.I agree with you as I do love the castle from 1 or the tower from 3, but I understand why they did this. At leas you get some color when entering further parts of the tree.

5. Big YMMV, but most fans love the demon designs. Plus, it's nice to see the demons bleed red again. 4 really lacked red blood spilling from demons.

6. Once again, YMMV. I enjoyed it, but when 6 comes out, I don't want them to do the same thing again.

7. While similar to 4, Dante is fully realized here. He has more weapons compared to 4, and carry more than 4 weapons with him after beating the standard difficulty. Big disagreement sir. You should check some combo videos after beating the game.

8. I agree on the loading screen. If you have the PC version, this is not as much as an issue. Also, the PS4 version censors some nudity for some stupid reason. Goddamn Sony trying to cater to people who are overly sensitive and don't play these type of games.

I am going to put up my own topic later, which is a review.

I played the demo and it did nothing to convince me this game was any good. Maybe I just don't get the whole Devil May Cry thing but it just seems that Bayonetta did the whole thing better.

I disagree somewhat. If we're talking about the first Bayonetta, it is better than Devil May Cry 1, 2, 4, or DmC (2013). But that's just due to the first game aging not as well and 2 being mediocre all around. 4 was a half-finished game with great combat and lazy level design. The reboot was just a lesser, polished version Devil May Cry 4 and Bayonetta (demon dodge is witch time). DMC3 & 5 I find better than Bayonetta 1 & 2.

I enjoy both Bayonetta games, but the first one had issues. the quick time events mainly. 95% of the quick time events are instant kills and they ruin your perfect score. Say what you will about all the yellow Devil May Cry eyes, but at least they don't have that problem. That, in the original Bayonetta I fell didn't have the right down to the difficulty. also, I hate it infinite climax mode. Unless you had a certain item with you witch time was automatically disabled. Bayonetta 2 fixed all of those issues. Bayonetta 2 only flaws or that they made her weaker in terms of power in gameplay. Compared to how much damage Bayonetta can pool off on any difficulty in the first game and then the second game you'll notice to stark difference. Enemies end up becoming damage sponges on harder difficulties, unless you use Umbran climax.

Its censored on PC and Xbox One as well. (You can disable by tinkering with the files on PC though)

No idea why the news are sniping only at Sony for this.

Unless the other youtube videos I saw were actually the PS4 version despite advertising it as Xbox or PC. And I chekced for things to make sure its the Xbox and PC like button prompts not being X O △ ☐

I did not know that. I just assumed, because of Sony's new policies. I wonder why the other versions were censored; especially the PC version.

I actually sorta agree, but I still quite like it, yet overall I don't care much for the game. I guess this deserves some explanation.

I liked playing as Nero the best, his moves were great and the arms were so much fun to play around with. Gerbera's blast dodge was the bees' knees. I do agree there should've been an option to switch them without breaking, but maybe you would've been too overpowered.

V was not so much bad as he was just super fucking easy to button mash your way through the game with. I was getting triple S ranks by just hammering the square and triangle buttons, meanwhile with Nero I had to put effort in to even reach S. Also, V's shtick of directing Shadow and Griffin really doesn't work too well with how the game handles combat controls. I'd often find Shadow do a launcher just out of an enemy's reach because the A.I. hadn't placed itself infront of them yet. And skills that require pushing the analog stick back or forward work well when you're in direct control of your character, not when that character is directing themselves and them facing or having their back to you is out of your control.

I liked Dante too, and didn't have much problems with the style switching, but once you get the Dante sword he too could pretty much button mash his way through most fights and still get a triple S rank. Also, I hated how the circle button skill for the Sword style got switched to a triangle button combo. The variety of styles is already quite overwhelming, but to then change how some moves are performed later on is kinda annoying.

I agree that the level design is dull, but it comes with the territory. What I remember of DMC4 was equally dull, and both Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising felt like you're wandering around lifeless environments as well. I'm assuming fans really don't care much about that and are simply focused on the action. To me though it makes it impossible to ever really get immersed in these games. DMC and Bayonetta especially since even in the cutscenes they're never able to establish a sense of place.

The characters were pretty cool though, and I really liked Nico.

While on the one had yes, it's a little silly to censor a couple of buttcracks, I can't find myself to get too mad about this since it's just the same 'hihi look, naughty bits' that's been in Japanese games since forever. Also, Japan censored to hell out of Resident Evil 2 remake yet I haven't seen any youtube outrage vidoes about that, or any other violent games Japan censors. It always makes this complaining come across as 'noooo, not my sexy girls'.

I'm aware Resident Evil 2 remake and re7 censorship situation in Japan. Hell, Japan has been coming down on gore in games since 2005. My problem with it is that I feel like in either situation, we are regressing the medium back and not moving it forward. I don't know about you, but I refused to go back to the days of the Super Nintendo (especially them) or Sega Genesis were certain games were censored for dumb reasons. Some made sense and others were just stupid. The early PS1 era was guilty of some of that shit too.

It's weird seeing Nintendo rarely censor anything now compared to Sony.

Yet nobody was making a fuss over all the dismemberment getting censored in the Japanese version of RE2 remake, which was a lot. Two highly sexualized women get slightly less sexualized though and the cup of YouTube outrage runneth over. People getting this pissed over creepy sex things getting mildly toned down, but not uttering word about other expamples of censorship in gaming in other countries feels regressive on its own.

Don?t worry, because if the new EU censorship laws [https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/10/eu-internet-censorship-will-censor-whole-worlds-internet] take place then we might all be in the same boat of not being able to enjoy anything potentially risque, no matter the content.

You do have a point. I remember seeing a YouTube video of a guy refusing to buy DMC 5, though he at least said he didn't have a problem are people still buying the game despite the censorship. But at the end of the day there is still a heavy sense of double standard in the air. Sony wants to act like it all sudden has standards. As for the Resident Evil 2 example, had the violence of censorship been in America or Europe/UK, there would have been a lot more complaints. The reason there aren't as many complains is because it's not happening in their home country, so it's "not as big a deal" or that's just "how the things work in that country". Now if I were Japanese, I would be pissed that I got a newtered version of my game. I won't continue further as I don't want to derail the topic. If you want to talk more, feel free to PM me.

I haven't played it yet. It's been sitting in my library dormant, waiting for free time (and a new gamepad). But I remember not liking Nero when I first played DMC4. I just wanted to play as Dante. But he grew on me and I really enjoyed his combat style once I got accustomed to it. I'd be pretty shocked to learn that he's not as fun to play as in DMC5. His new appearance looks bad though, from what I've seen.

Trust me, Nero is fun to play. I do prefer his other looks, but I am getting used to the new one now. V is surprisingly fun too! I've been having way too much fun with him.

I like his appearance better here, it's more distinct. In DMC4 you could tell they wanted a new character, but still made him look kinda like Dante so as not to scare off hardcore fans. I'd say that all the faces look fenomenal in DMC5, significantly better than they did in RE2 remake.

When I played 4 I hated Nero. I couldn't ever get any of his moves to work properly. On the missions with him, I always got low grades at the end. The moment the gameplay went to Dante, I started racking up S ranks with ease.

I haven't played 5 nor do I plan to since they are forcing Nero into the game. I don't like him, I never wanted him. I don't need yet another game with a character I can't do anything with.

A BLOCK button!? Are you on drugs or did you never play a DMC game before 3? Dante doesn't BLOCK outside of Royal Guard! He dodge rolls and jumps to keep his combo going.

I'm relatively early into the game but I'm absolutely loving the game so far. I didn't think I'd like V as much as I do, he looked kinda frail and wimpy but he's nothing like that at all. He's great both character wise and gameplay wise. That shapeshifting panther is just awesome and the craw is hilarious. Also I love the more lovecraftian style of enemies this time around. The robot arms for Nero are great too, especially the rocket punch that lets you skateboard on a freaking missile! XD

I dunno where the button mashing thing comes around, if you do that you won't get SSS rankings. The chars always had one of those moves where you mash to do a bunch of hits but you can't just rely on those if you wanna get just frame revs on Nero's sword and if you do that with V you'll just get your pets killed instantly. Not gotten to Dante yet but I'm super into the game and it most importantly feels like DMC still. I had dearly missed this feeling.

Oh and I didn't think Nico would fit in the story initially but she very quickly won me over. It's rare I go from moderate dislike to like.

I know that, which is why I was hoping they do.
