For just plain fun: Crackdown 1.
Slashy ninja action: Ninja Gaiden 2.
Driving: I've heard some good things about Forza and Dirt. I used to play Project Gotham games, they were good.
Zombie killing: Dead Rising 1 and 2.
Punchy action and stealth: Batman Arkham Asylum, although Batman Arkham City is almost here.
The Orange Box, for obvious reasons.

Off the Xbox Live Arcade: Bastion (great story driven game).
Shadow Complex (plays a bit like Super Metroid).
Castlevania SOTN (also like Metroid).

Get the Orange Box if you can find it. Portal is awesome, and TF2 is great if you can play online.

Fallout 3 is old, but it's still one of the better games around.
You'll probably like Assassins Creed, Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2.

Can we sticky a catch-all for these type of threads? "Recommended games" with people making their recommended lists for each console.

Seriously I must have seen hundreds of these threads on these sites and they're exactly the same every time.

Halo Reach. It's basically the only Halo game I like, and I like it a lot. It just seems like they really nailed the formula with Reach, I can't really explain it.

I usually play Nintendo games like Zelda, Mario, etc. But I am slowly getting into shooters and I've been into RPGs for a long time.
With this in mind allow me to reccomend a short list of games that you might like:

1- Mass Effect: This is probably one of the best RPG's on the Xbox I've ever seen so the whole series is worth checking out (also has a bit of shooter to it if that's to your liking).

2- Bioshock: Another blend of shooter and RPG but it does have something of a dark and dystopian mood to it (not sure if that's a bit of a problem considering your preference for Zelda and Mario stuff but if you don't mind darkness in games then it's also definately worth checking out).

3- Fallout 3/New Vegas: Someone else did reccomend Oblivion but in my experience...it wasn't very good, however, the Fallout games that followed it I actually did find to be suprising with a lot of the things that bugged me from Oblivion having been revised and refined and with more of a sense of personality and uniqueness than the relatively bland and generic setting and population of the Elder Scrolls series. Worth a check if you're after a mildly insane post-apocolyptic RPG.

4- Brutal Legend: A bit of a weird combination of Hack and Slash and RTS but I'd highly reccomend it for it's story, characterisation and the world alone (not to mention that once you get into it the gameplay is actually pretty good), I probably should mention that this one does get a bit of an easier pass from be because I'm a massive Jack Back fan (please don't hurl whiskey bottles at my face).

5- Perfect Dark Zero: I have to reccomend this one largely because it's very much a callback to a lot of the old shooters like Goldeneye and Timesplitters, if you liked those games and want something like them on the Xbox then these are worth a look (also, the Perfect Dark remake on XBLA is even better for this).

6- Castle Crashers: An XBLA title that is very reminiscent of Golden Axe and it's ilk except with dark cartoon humour and RPG elements, not much more I can say really. Definately good for playing with friends as well.

And I'll leave my suggestions at that before this becomes essay length, if you want anymore reccomendations or have any other questions then by all means feel free to ask (I'm happy to help).

I went out tonight and bought a 250gig Xbox 360 with the live Gold starter package, Black Ops, and Medal of Honor. Are there any other games I should be looking into when I get my paycheck next week?
Fallout 3, Halo Reach & Just Cause 2. Then in 4 weeks; Skyrim & BF3

First off. High 5 for getting a 360.
Second, Gears and Halo are your friends. Medal of Honor is not imo. Yes it used to be good, but now I prefer Halo. Your money though, its up to you.

I'd recommend getting a copy of Darksiders, it's almost like a mixture of Zelda and Legacy of Kain.

I really liked Dante's Inferno, so I'd also recommend that.

Most other games have been said already.

ok? regardless I beat 2 in 7 hours on legendary and i'm pretty awful as dual analog sticks, and 3 wasn't much longer if at all. padding out the gameplay by dying a lot and having to redo sections doesn't really count toward a longer game.

besides, I liked the first halo, and most of the third, but they ARE short.

If you wish to play Halo, wait for anniversary, it's Halo 1 with modern Graphics and no tibits of such for the story.

This, especially if you like multiplayer games. The single player is good, but the multi is amazing, and is actually the part of the game that was developed first and had most time put into it despite the fact that the game was advertised much more as a single player adventure.

Looking down my list of owned games, i will suggest the following:

Gears of War 1-3: 2-3 are 360 exclusive and i've found them very enjoyable, especially in co-op

Batman - Arkham Asylum: One of the very very few games i've played where the 'other stuff' outside of the main story are genuinely entertaining (i.e. the riddler challenge thingys)

Alan Wake - A little bit of an odd game, if you can get into the mood of the game, i think it's a real winner. Maybe get a demo or something first and see if its for you.

As already mentioned, the Mass Effect games. Personally, i'm not that sold on them as games, but they're really looking like making a pretty epic story!

Dead Space 1-2: Several good reasons to play these games; if you like 3rd person shooters, action-horrory games, a pretty decent story and/or love the film Event Horizon, you should enjoy these.

Several more, but i feel i'm rambling... one last mention for Splatterhouse. yes it's stupid, but it's violent, headbanging (i.e. awesome heavy metal soundtrack) fun stupid!
