I've never really had a huge debate with my parents about content. Probably because the most violent games didn't really interest me. I was way more into RPGs when I actually got into gaming. I blame awesome RPGs like FF7, Legend of Legaia, Suikoden 2, Breath of Fire 3, so on and so forth. Damn the PSX era RPGs were really great...
Nowadays, they couldn't tell me what to play even if they wanted to (gotta love having your own money/car/etc).
The only real discussion I ever had with my parents on the subject, was a little while back when my dad said that he didn't understand why I played them. He apparently sees them as a waste of time/money. I just looked at him dumbfounded. My mom came into the room about then, and I just told my dad that EVERYTHING is a waste of time/money and listed a couple different things that he likes, such as television, movies, liquor, and cigarettes (some of which I like, too). Once, my mom knew what was going on, she agreed with me, and my dad didn't say another word. I think he accepted my view...
My parents are pretty reasonable.

Sorry to sound like an idiot but what is this california vs. video games thing?
Is it a legal thing?
Yep. Long story short, California wants to make it illegal to sell "violent" video games to minors. The law is even complete with a $1000 fine for offenders. The law was deemed unconstitutional by two separate courts and the Supreme Court agreed to hear the appeal. No one really knows why the Supreme Court has decided to hear it, though. Nearly a dozen other lower courts have decreed other similar laws unconstitutional without any deviation. Why they are hearing it is beyond me, but I hope that they are going to side with the industry to prove once and for all that these sorts of laws are illegal.
