wtf...

I just lost so many stories I was writing.... Lost 1000+ hours of gameplay... lost everything...

does anyone know if they where so happenly put somewhere else...

I'm sure many of us have been there. I think of the hymn "It is well with my soul" in the event of such an occurence. It may seem stupid and trivial, but it works for me, seeing as most of my plights can't really compete against the guy who wrote it; a man who's son died in the same fire that ruined his buisness, and then a ship he was on sank and killed his four daughters and his wife. 'Someone's always got it worse, so there's little sense complaining', is my motivation.

This isn't really advice related, is it? If it's deleted, it's pretty much gone. If this was a system restore or a simple right click+d, then that might be fixable, but if you didn't back it up, the only way I could see it being elsewhere is if you use Windows 7 and it threw it into your .Old Windows folder when you reformatted your hard drive. :/

I'm sorry for your loss, I recently lost a lot too, in my last reformat because I didn't back things up, and was eager to fix a GPU related issue. :/

Didn't know really where to put it... So I put it in here... :(

I don't understand exactly how you lost the files but have you considered a file restoring program? There are free ones on the net. I once wiped a memory card in my camera by accident and lost hundreds of holiday photos. Managed to recover most of them however. Otherwise, sorry mate.

Could he not just restore it back to a date where he knows he had the data? Or is that not possible on 7? I don't know it very well.

- Edit -

HTML code issue. Fucking iPod...

I remember this happening to me recently. Every folder on my computer was wiped... except for one. My Documents. And wow, I had saved so much stuff. I was epic relieved. Sadly, I still lost Sauerbraten, Morrowind, and waaaaaaaay more games. Strange virus is was strange.

Stop! Don't touch that hard drive!

Now, download [a href="http://www.piriform.com/recuva"]this[/a], install it and start it up.

The recovery wizard should show up. Select Other (Show all files), then I don't know (I assume you're looking for files that used to be on your computer).

It should give you a list of deleted files that are still on the computer. Now you need to look through the list of files and recover the ones that you want (to do this quickly, just check the ones you want then 'Recover checked files' by right clicking).

Note that some files will be damaged and might be completely unrecoverable. Others might just have little bits missing. Hopefully this will help, though.

If you have the old drive, it could be possible to use a recovery utility on it (as Tharwen says).

In the future, I suggest checking your backups regularly. Good practice is to actually do a restore every so often, if using backup software, to ensure smooth operation.

I don't know what to suggest about whether they go anywhere, but I'm really sorry to hear that :(

I lost a 98 chapter story I once wrote whilst I was in secondary school, no back up no nothing (well the backup had a really bad virus so we couldn't connect it to anything). I was so upset.

Hope someone on here can help you with perhaps finding if they've got elsewhere!

Hey, a data wipe can be good for a person.
It liberates the soul of the attachment to save games, and you can feel a new drive to recreate the stories you really felt strongly about.

At least, after 11 hard drive crashes, that's how I take a memory wipe.
