Empyrean - commonly refers to heaven or other alternate existences with spiritual conotations, uncommonly means "relating to fire"

Does it strike you as odd that the less common definition is the more literal (pyr=fire)?

I learn a new word every day thanks to Merriam-Webster.

Flack, myopic, voracity... (although a lot of the time, they aren't really new to me. I just enjoy the history since I'm taking a bunch of language courses this year)

Dammit.
I wish I knew intricate words...

Well since I've read this thread, the new words I learnt today are:

Edit: there was a big list here but it took up way too much space, just look at your own posts and feel special.

Okay so I actually already knew quite a lot of those.

But I did find out that I am (or I at least play myslef off as) an anachronism.

I don't think that this thread can go on any more until we decide, once and for all, what the meaning of "is" is.

Well, I don't learn many new words now, but this thread has certainly reminded me of a few of my favorites.

Particularly "labyrinthine." Definitely among the "Best Words in the Universe."

Ooh! And "vacuous." Yet another substitute I can use in place of "stupid." I use it a lot, usually referring to classmates, usually freshmen. So far, I've got: Stupid, idiotic, moronic, retarded, imbecilic, and vacuous.

oh ya! Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.........its the name of some kind of disease
That's the improper name for it, and it's a disease similar to Pneumonia where the recipient inhaled too many disulphide, silicone, and other organic and toxic gases found from magma. Usually, mining near, around, or beside volcanoes. Hence all of the root words.
lol...well wikipedia just said t was a sickness so just slammed disease down......

better is Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia: the irrational fear of really big words.

Skulduggery: dishonest behaviour
Nascent: just beginning or having just been born
Acquiesce: to submit passively
Superfluous: extra and unnessesary. As in: "Superfluous third nipple"
Ameliorate: to make better, to improve
Cornobble: To hit with a fish

I could do this all day.

I believe ameliorate specifically means to remedy or relieve, as in an illness of malaise. I haven't heard that word in a long time though, so I could just be talking out of my ass.

Hey guys! Let me open a dictionary too!

Now use them in that real life thing and tell us whether you actually sound smart or wannabe smart. I'm happy just getting a word out with four syllables.

Wait...why hasn't anyone pulled out the Colloquial Dictionaries? Bet they're more unknown to others than you think.

agreed.

in fact, that's the adjective usage of the word.

Sesquipedalian actually has a noun use, which is just "a large word" or "someone who uses large words."

I found one dictionary that just said this, and I loved it;

Ses-qui-ped-al-i-an
n.
A large word.

Verbose(adj): long-winded; using or containing too many words.
vox populi: Latin for 'voice of the people', it's used to refer to the media.
vanguard: advance guard
forerunner: an omen, sign, or indication of something to follow; someone or something before

I do love forerunner, and all the synonyms, like precursor.
