EDIT: "The Delta Star" by Joseph Wambaugh. A novel about the officers at an LAPD precinct that was often funny, sometimes tragic, and, in at least one instance, frighteningly prophetic (it was written in the 80's and featured a Rodney King-like beatdown of a suspect by some cops). I usually don't read "Cop" novels, but this was a great book.

Hello everybody. i just finished college and I bored out of my mind!! I am set for games but I really need a book/books to read. Among my favourites are The Dresden files (have all 12 and I know about the 13th in a month) which is about a moden day wizard fighting evil, Codex Alera which is a bit like lord of the rings, Night Angle trillogy is a fantasy type book.

So any suggestions you might have would really help me out. Thanks in advance.

It may not be what you're looking for, but two of my favourite/most recently read books are 1984 by George Orwell and The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler.

I suggest getting onto Google Books and downloading a bunch of free ones to read, there is a massive set that are free to read online, get there now.

Me and my friend really like a series based in the lands of Dungons and Dragons/ Forgotten Realms, its by R. A. Salvatore, called The Legend of Drizzt, Its really detailed and has a great story, highly recommended to RPG and Fantasy fans.

You could try The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. It's about a high school student who learns that one of his classmates, unbeknownst even to herself, is actually a goddess capable of destroying the universe. That's what I call a premise.

I should mention that although it originates in Japan you don't have to like Japanese stuff to appriciate it.

I just finished the Dresden files myself a few weeks ago and the books i'd suggest are:
Any of David Eddings books would be perfect.
Also Magician by Raymond E. Feist.
And I'll second the Jonathan Strange and Mister Norrell suggestion.

Doesn't matter if you've seen the film, or heard the radio show, or seen the TV series, they're all a bit different. Except for the film which was massively different.

hm... well, if you like fantasy I would suggest Phillip Pullman's Dark materials, a beautiful trilogy about parallel worlds. In one of those people's soul live in a form of an animal. Sometimes it's compared with Harry Potter but this is ridiculous. I love HP but Dark Materials are much more serious.
Also, I would recommend Stephen King's books xD even though mostly it's horror he does have fantasy books, such as his famous Dark Tower series (but I don't really liked it). But because I love horror, I recommend King to anyone lol

I strongly recomend "The Idiot" by Dostoyevsky and "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding. If you're looking for something easier to read, but still very good, then go for the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov.

If you've got some time (and loose money) I absolutely recommend the Cirque du Freak series and the Demonata series, both written by Darren Shan. CdF is 12 books long, and Demonata is 10, so you definitely have to make an investment to read them, but they're absolutely worth it to the end.

Amazing books, they really are. Incidentally, the saga of Larten Crepsley has been started if you didn't know Phelpsing. I've only read the first one, second one is out, third one on it's way in October. He also wrote a stand alone called The Thin Executioner which was pretty good.
Apart from anything by Shan, Eoin Colfer, especially his Artemis Fowl series, Matthew Reilly if you're just looking for some action, Dean Koontz if you like thrillers (check second-hand books stores, guys been writing for years), Garth Nix creates very charming fantasy worlds, Keys To The Kingdom especially but his Old Kingdom trilogy is awesome as well. Oh, and two of my favourite fantasy authors, they managae to mix action and humour so well, are Jonathan Stroud, he wrote the Bartimaeus Trilogy, though there's now a fourth one, and Derek Landy, wrote the Skulduggery books. Especially Derek Landy, they look a little childish but they are really brilliant.

Wheel of Time seems to be the best choice if you're bored. There are 13 volumes and each one is rather big so it will last you at least 3 months.

The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie, but I warn you that the end of the series is just crushingly depressing.

This. And I wouldn't call it crushingly depressing; just horribly realistic and ironic. Its still the best modern fantasy series I've read.

Totally agree with you both. It's rather crushing in hopes and such but you really get to love the main characters, particularly a certain inquisitor

OT: Anything by J.V. Jones and most of David & Leigh Eddings' works (there are a few that are too modern for my taste).
Also, I've been recently reading the Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks. I'm certainly loving it
Finally, just a quick thing, read the Icewall Trilogy and "The Rod of Seven Parts" by Douglas Niles. The latter is quite short, but it was one of the first books that got me into the fantasy/fiction genres.
