"Good Omens", by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman: A demon and an angel who have been on Earth since the dawn of mankind discover that the Endtimes are about to begin. Neither of them is particularly eager for this, having made the mistake of starting to actually LIKE humans.
The books I recommended in a similar thread: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.290000-Reccomend-some-books#11500169
EDIT: "The Delta Star" by Joseph Wambaugh. A novel about the officers at an LAPD precinct that was often funny, sometimes tragic, and, in at least one instance, frighteningly prophetic (it was written in the 80's and featured a Rodney King-like beatdown of a suspect by some cops). I usually don't read "Cop" novels, but this was a great book.
