I'm tired of doing Let's Plays/Playthroughs while recording with a normal camera, due to the shoddy quality. First off, how do I set up an external capture card to record footage played on my PS3? Second, are there any cards that can record me talking, or will I have to do post-filming commentary? Last, the obvious question; recommend me a good quality card.

If you set up with a DVD recorder so that the HDMI cable runs into that and then out again to the TV, you should be able to record your footage that way. Depending on what recorder you get, you could either burn it to a DVD or take the footage straight off the recorder's hard drive using a PC.

For the voice over, it wouldn't be easy to have both the game noise and the voice over recorded onto the same file at once, but if you don't care about the game noise then you should be able to set up the DVD recorder so that it takes input sound for the HDMI cable from a different input, such as coaxial or optical. If you could get a microphone connected to a coaxial or optical output, you should be able to do the voice over that way.

If you care about the game noise, the only thing I can think of is recording them on separate devices and just overlaying the talking later during editing (which you are bound to have to do anyway.)

Thanks, that helped some. Also, is there any sort of cord that I could plug the USB end into in order to extend the USB down to my laptop? (My TV is mounted high on the wall)

Always happy to help.

The usb end of what? The microphone?

I think you can get usb extention cables pretty cheap on ebay. http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m570.l1311&_nkw=usb+extension+cable&_sacat=See-All-Categories

The external card I'm looking at has a USB end for the TV and one for the computer, and I just need a cord that can extend it down. Thanks, makes my job easier.
