Grind is usually a bad thing.

It is the process of leveling up through monotonous tasks; such as killing monsters for hours and hours.

Doing anything boring for long periods of time (in wow, killing beast mobs to farm leather) or having to do something boring every day (daily quests, hate those)

Grind:
A term used in video games, usually mmorpgs.

To grind is to kill monsters or mobs in an area for the singular purpose of gaining xp (experience points) in order to level, as opposed to farming or completing quest objectives within the game.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=grind&page=2

It is long, typically boring, and detracts from "normal" gameplay experience. i.e. completing quests, participating in events, etc. It also encompasses killing mobs repeatedly for specific items or money (farming), and collecting "faction" or xp-like, but non-experience-based scoring.

The Escapist's John Funk has written two [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/view-from-the-road/7904-View-From-the-Road-An-Axe-to-Grind-Part-1] articles [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/view-from-the-road/7932-View-from-the-Road-An-Axe-to-Grind-Part-2] on grind, the first of which is probably most relevant to the question at hand.

Since you have multiple definitions already I am just going to contribute by saying that a fair chunk of an MMO is grinding. People can argue conjecture about it but there is always grinding in MMOs and its almost always a bad thing.

Grinding. Type 1: XP grinding. Doing quests or killing critters over and over til you meet a certain xp goal. Type 2: gold grinding. Doing quests that have a good gold reward or that drops valuable items you can sell so you can stockpile gold. Grinding is annoyingly repetitive, but it has to be done to progress in the game. DDO has less grinding compared to WOW but less PVP and raids and instances too.

Final Fantasy XIII Platinum Trophy. Max out all characters. The. HORROR.

Sorry. Doesn't help much if you've never played the game. Others have answered your question, but here's my two cents. Grinding means when you do certain tasks over and over and over and over and over. Normally, these tasks and small and annoying errands. Go kill a level 1 monster again and again, even when you're at level twenty. People often do this when they want experience points (in which case the monster would be a higher level than 1), but there are other reasons to grind. One such reason is farming, in which you kill a certain creature, or play a certain mini game, or whatever, again and again in hope that you kill the ultra-rare item that can only be obtained by doing said action. Sadly, the odds of getting the item are normally 1/100,000.
There's my two cents. No idea if it helped, but grinding is rarely fun, and always annoying after ten minutes of it.
