You're asking for ALOT there, you WILL NOT get that, gaming laptops are like £700 onward.

Well, my laptop is pretty nice(runs Crysis Warhead max pretty smoothly), and cost $1300.

If you can get that much to spare I would say get this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8892825&type=product&id=1211587727985

The only thing I don't like about it is the processor is only 1.86 GHz, but it is easily upgradeable.

Bottom-line: No matter how much you pay, laptop will be top of the line for only a few months, if even that long. Accept that the best games now will be nearing the top of the curve, it's virtually downhill from there.

Assuming you're wanting top-of-line versus cost comparison, you're looking at about (as of 2 PM, 10/5/08) £807- £891, lemme post the specs for you. (Mind you, these specs don't factor shipping, which I would but I wouldn't even know where to begin counting the foreign shipping.)

A laptop is not a gaming machine. It might be able to play games, but if you want a portable gaming rig, you're not going to get what you're looking for in a laptop. Laptops are about portability, not power. You need to consider what you're going to be using the computer for and whether you really need a laptop, or whether it might be better to get a desktop and an eeePC or something.

I suggest PMing mshcherbatskaya, who works for HP on the business side but may have a recommendation, or Aries_Split, whom I believe builds and sells computers (probably not laptops, but he probably knows something about them.)

Here is a link to Tom's Hardware chart for mobile CPUs.

Finally, seek out a November issue of PC Gamer, they have a long article on PC gaming. As other posters have pointed out, a decent gaming laptop costs 700 pounds or more. For $900 US or less, you can probably find a laptop with Intel X3100 GMA or an nvidia 8400M - the absolute minimum for gaming - and a decent Core 2 Duo dual core processor. Expect to be limited to older or non-cutting edge games at medium to low settings, but some things like COD 4 and WOW are said to scale fairly well. For $1,400 US you can get the Gateway P-7811FX with a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM (important since you'll be using Vista and sharing RAM), a 17" 1920x1200 screen, and an nvidia 9800M GTS Graphics array, a pretty good gaming platform that even plays Crysis - this is what PC Gamer says is the best deal today in gaming laptops. I don't have any personal experience on gaming laptops, so do your homework.

EDIT: That ASUS laptop NewClassic posted looks pretty damn sweet.

Throw out your gaming option. Laptops suck for gaming, even gaming laptops, which are a complete waste of money and give you half the performance of a desktop computer for twice the money. Grab yourself a netbook like the Acer Aspire One or Asus Eee 900 or 1000 for the office software and Internet usage (other netbooks aren't really worth considering, and the Acer gives the best features and hardware for the price), and then build yourself a desktop computer for gaming. It's not worth spending a ton of money just for a shitty compromise.
