I need a new anime

Patlabor the movie: great story, interesting characters, granted the action is a tad sparce, but considering they're well placed in the structure of the film and are nicely choreographed it doesn't matter, and the mecha in it are about as 'realistic' as you can get. Also, zero fanservice, which is undoubtebly a plus.
ditto all these points for its sequel

Gun X Sword: compelling revenge story, set in the future on another planet with a slight western vibe to it, and plenty of giant robots

gundam 00: this one is a bit of a mixed bag, the story is alright, but seeing as its gundam, it will not be particulary subtle about....anything, also season 2 takes a hit story wise in favour of more impressive battle scenes due to a bigger budget.

Most of the anime I tend to watch are harem-based, so I might not be any good at recommendations regarding your requirements, but here goes:

How about High School of the Dead, yes it is as silly as it sounds but I'm liking it at the moment (I've only seen one episode so far). Admittedly the story is about as generic as you can get. Zombie outbreak, people trying to survive zombie outbreak, you can piece it all together really. There were some action sequences, if you count killing zombies with baseball bats and zombies ripping high-schoolers apart action sequences.

I'm kicking myself at the moment, but the only other anime I can think of that may fit your requirements is Rosario Vampire. It's kind of got a harem thing going on, more formulaic in the first season. It has a sort of 'Monster of the Week' in most of the episodes although it does get better in the later episodes, the story is better explained, and also introduces hard-hitting elements such as deceit and betrayal between the main characters. The second season is definitely better if you want a more rewarding storyline, it gets really good in the last two episodes. Of course, there are quite a lot of panty shots and innuendo, but I guess (judging from which anime's I've seen) it wouldn't be a harem anime without them.

I've sort of got a soft spot for Rosario Vampire since it was the first anime I avidly watched since Cowboy Bebop, which was years ago.

If you haven't seen it watch Code Geass, it is an absolutely stellar anime in my books and most people who have seen it will agree. It is a very action packed anime with a great story.

Another good one is Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan, it starts off a little bit childish but after I got through the first few episode thinking it lacked the serious tones that I liked it got much better and I now rank it up with Code Geass, Full Metal Alchemist and Bleach (even if the filler arcs were in most cases absolutely terrible).

Edit: Looking one of the posts above mine made me remember Eureka Seven. Another great anime, I highly recommend that one as well.

I'll be honest, most of what you listed above I dislike (apart from FMA).

If you want a good series, it depends on how cerebral you want it to be.

For some reason, a lot of people like the Gundam over-series, mecha if you're into that kind of thing. The stories are good, but can get repetitive and it takes itself a bit too seriously (at least 00 did). Macross is OK too, if a bit too music orientated (a lot of insert songs, but there's a fair clonk of bloodless-action).

For pure head-fuck: Serial Experiments Lain, Paranoia Agent, NGE, RahXephon and to a lesser extent Ergo Proxy, but you have to watch them sober and serious otherwise you won't be able to appreciate them.

Shura no Toki was a good one for action (definitely for the first half). Cowboy Bebop has a bit of everything but keeps its integrity very well (see Samurai Champloo for its spiritual successor, though the feel is quite different).

For something lighter: FMP (Full Metal Panic), though I much prefer FMP:TSR (the Second Raid) which has one of the best anime bad-guys ever (evil strategist who can be described with the phrase 'random acts of violence while singing').

Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL and Avatar: The Last Airbender are all essentials. (The last one isn't technically an anime, but it comes close enough.)

Aside from those, I've had good times with Noir and Gungrave.

Hmm I would also recommend Highschool of the Dead, if your ready to watch basicly an anime version of Left4Dead with WAAAAAAAY too much fanservice. Now as bad as that sounds it's still a quite good anime. x)

To Aru Majutsu No Index (A Certain Magical Index) needs to be pimped a LOT more. It's some pretty great action-comedy stuff, kinda like X-men versus Harry Potter only better than both combined. Plus the male lead, in a startling break from tradition, is awesome. In a world full of people with the firepower to level cities, he punches people in the face. Especially women. He punches a lot of girls.

It's manlier than it sounds.

Also the side-story To Aru Kagaku No Railgun (A Certain Scientific Railgun) is pretty great too. It's a lot more slice-of-life cute girls than straight up action, though.
God damn Misaka is adorable.

Hmmm. Nobody has recommended Mahou Shoujo Madoka yet. One of the weirdest and most interesting animes I've yet seen. It's in the 'magical girl' genre (as the name implies...) but it's a psychological thriller. Absolutely excellent. I really don't want to say any more as it's a show that should absolutely be watched without preconception, but good grief, I recommend it to anybody with an interest to anime.

Since you like action anime I suggest you watch getbackers and watch it dubbed because it fits more with its theme.

And all the voices fit the characters.
