Champions Online? It's mostly free. They make you pay for costumes and shit, but that's pretty much it. It might not work on your computer (it's pretty graphically advanced), but it was the only one I could think of.
Since this has turned into a "favorite free MMO" thread (the OP has said "thanks, got what I needed"), I'll second Champions Online. The main downside is the graphics requirements-- less than DC Universe Online, but still will need a midrange PC. FWIW, it helps to turn off the cartoon outlines.

Being a "Silver Player" (the F2P model), I'll disagree with the idea that it's seriously gimped, as a previous poster put it. The Silver model is a different one from the Gold, but it's not bad. Characters are limited to preset "Archetypes" which cover most major comic book concepts, and there's a few instances you need to pay for. But seriously-- 80% of the content for free when CoH only has a two week trial and DCUO is $50 upfront? Sure, if you've got a really cool and unique idea for a hero, Gold is the way to go. On the other hand, for a month or so of superhero giggles for free, CO Silver all the way.

Try League of legends you can set it to low.its basicly a stratigy game where you play with a team of five people and you have to get into the enemys base and destory it.that discription did not do it too much justice.but try it for yourself the game is superfun.its not open world though.
League of Legends (LoL) is an obvious choice. It's DOTA (from WC3. Familiar?) just perfected and totally free. It's really fun, and it's ideal for a LAN or just playing with some friends while talking over Skype or similar.

League of Legends. Yes I realize its not an RPG but it is an MMO. The champions are richly varied, the two maps (going on three) have yet to get old for me and I've played it since it came out. You can buy champions with cash if you want but you can also get them with IP which you get automatically after every game. Also the game provides a set of f2p champions that cycles every week so you can get a feel for multiple champions and figure out which one you like the most.

Just realize I haven't said what the game actually is. Rundown is this: you get automatched with a team or invite your friends to a team, 3v3 or 5v5, and go up against an enemy team, you chose a lane, top/bottom/mid, mid has one person, top/bottom have two per lane in 5v5. you level up and gain gold while you play to buy items to create a particular build. check out www.mobafire.com if you want to see how viral this game is. It's incredibly easy to join and play and has an excellent tutorial for showing the nuts and bolts of gameplay.

WHY isn't Dungeon Fighter Online released in Europe? I get sad seeing so many people recommend it.

OT: League of Legends doesn't have very high requirements if you turn the specs down to minimum and is a lot of fun.
The only downside is that it has a steep, steep learning curve (i've been playing it since open beta and still occasionally make really bad calls)

Vindictus, Allods, Lord of the Rings Online are the ones I'd recommend. Not sure about system requirements.
Don't fucking play Allods. Pay2Win. Unplayable WoW copy. Lord of the rings free to play is just a commercial for the full retail game. Vindictus... not sure about that one.

Buy Guild Wars. You can run it on a netbook.

The rest of the options, minus the flash types will not have a chance in hell of running on your laptop.

I need a new MMO. i used to play runescape, but now i want something different. it needs to be free, FUN, low system requirements, and easy for my friends to join in.

while we're here whats your favorite MMO?

EDIT- my laptop can barely run runescape on high graphics
I would recommend DDO, that dungeons and dragons mmo, it's pretty fun. Warning, don't play it unless you get at least one friend to join with you, pug groups in that game are hard to get, and retarded beyond all measurement.

Echo Bazzar. It's pretty fun and has some nice story telling features. Also it's got some cool game play mechanics and you get to decide what you advance in.

raids
:D wow, you are thick here, AoC has 7? that it? ONLY 7 sucks for you, we got 9 state side
Oh I see where our problem in communication is, you don't know what raid means. Vindictus most surely has 0 raids per the definition of raids. I'm sure they're calling that pathetic excuse of theirs "raids" though.

I'll go so far as saying AoC's Raid content is more interesting than any other game's, and has more hours to put in than anything but WoW.
you do realize, any comparison to WoW is actually hurting your case far as I'm concerned.

and while I'll grant you, our raids are shorter,(mostly one room full of trash, then the boss) due to the combat engine, the battles are more intense, since you can't just have 1 or 2 guys baby sitting with the healer keeping them alive and the 'glass canons' unloading on em [sarcasm]yeah, been there, real fun[/sarcasm]

and, I'd call bullshit on it being 'the most interesting' but really, i don't care.
i really don't, i don't play Vindictus for the story (which is decent, not the best, but I've seen worse) i play it for the combat

you can ramble on and on, about how 'AoC dose this' or 'AoC dose that', doesn't change the last email i got from funcom asking me to come back sounded like begging, and doesn't change the games OTHER flaws.

its the same as every other MMO, all about cool down nursing, and 'numbers' only difference is the aesthetic, but in the end its the same, and if i want 'cool down nursing' and a 'numbers game', I'll play CoH or Requiem, both have given me far more enjoyment then the 3 months i wasted on AoC

how ever, i demand more from the combat side of things now, and for all your hating on Vin, AoC can never, nor will ever beat Vindictus in the department of combat, since the 'numbers game' of Vindictus is only 5% of your success rate, other other 95% is divided between knowing the bosses 'tells', knowing your chosen characters skills, and your ability to use those skill, which is why the 'no armor' oaths of honor exist

brag to me when 'your numbers' are enough to solo one of those raids your so proud of, oh wait :D that'll never happen

waste some one else time with your ramblings

Wooooooow, either you have some problems with your attention abilities or you have been lying all along if you've "played AoC for 3 months" YET FAIL to have seen AoC has no cooldowns? Duuuuuude, you blow my mind. You just argue for the sake of making your cheap F2P game look good, and you're full of it.
*shrugs* it was like a year ago :p and your one to talk about 'not knowing the game' your bad mouthing, how much time you actually put into Vindictus, cause I'm guessing not much

and it IS the same, cool down or not, STILL JUST ANOTHER MMO WHERE STATS ARE ALL THAT MATTER some of us have grown out of that, and desire more from an mmo then that

i'll take my 'skill based' action MMO to your, 'stat based' MMO anyday

Are you sure? I've heard that maple story isn't free.
OP: Sorry can't think of anything free, but if your willing to spend 20$ (as the only payment) then MineCraft is good. O:)
Very sure! =]

The only thing there is to buy is, perhaps, certain clothing pieces/pets/and double exp things.
Granted, it might not be to everyone's liking, but for a free game it offers a lot of classes, quests, story arches, and generally has a huge population.

Though you may notice that the majority of that population is in their early teens. I sincerely believe it's worth a go.

Ok I think i'll try it out, Most of the population being in their early teens shouldn't be a problem, seeing as how i'm also in my early teens, then again everyone in my year in school are also in their early teens and I can't say i'm fond of most of them, will try it anyway though :)
