It's unfortunate that there doesn't seem to be a standard or benchmark for these things (sampling frequency?).

Recently I tested the iPhone 4S video mic with an app for use as a recording mic. During the test I found the audio quality to be fantastic for what I want; I've been hoping to record audio for LEGO tutorials or Let's Plays. However, this was not my own iPhone 4s, so I cannot use it regularly or when no one is nearby.

I wish to purchase my own mic then, but not an iPhone 4S. I have a history of neglecting my Apple products beneath my laptop and flip phone, and I do not want to purchase an entire entire iPhone if I will only be using the video mic and a $2 app.

So can anyone give me recommendations for a quality microphone comparable to an iPhone 4S? I would greatly appreciate it.

Incidentally, I also tried a recent iPod Touch. The quality was almost there, but not the same.

What are you going to be recording on? Different devices have different connectors. How much are looking to spend, you can spend a small fortune on microphones.

On? Device? My Desktop. The motherboard has a 3.5 mm mic jack and I plug the iPhone into that using a male-male cable.

I have around $250 to spend on this.

While I cannot vouch for this myself as I don't have one yet (all I've used is the mic attatched to my Turtle Beach PX21 headset, which... isn't that bad, honestly), I know quite a few people swear on the "Snowball" by Blue Microphones:

They're USB-based, and from what I hear they are both great for more professional-ish recording and are a fantastic value at their $50-$70 price tag. It's one I've personally been looking at getting myself.

The snowball has a similar frequency response to the iPhone 4s mic. It will do voice comfortably for a lets play.

Too late on the snowball, I decided to promptly take the USB advice and buy a meteor (also named after a round thing). Thanks anyways.
