I need a tragic anime...

Angel beats and school days are both tragic.

I consider Clannad (and Clannad after story) to be a better anime though; even though it doesn't quite fit the definition of a tragedy.

Edit: I wouldn't recommend watching School days if you like being in a good mood though.

Bokurano is a very, very tragic anime, and at the same time very intellectual and deep.

Let me tell you a great one that's off the grid. Check out the anime called Casshern Sins. I recently bought the dvd set for the 1st 13 episodes at random, i was moved by the story and it all so sad. Dude, you have to check it out.

I assumed any anime was tragic, becuase ssomoene always ended up dying to further chracter development.

BUt i would watch speed grapher. or cowboy bebop, bucause the episodes that deal with spikes best are tragic.

Surprising no one has mentioned Gantz yet - extremely well done and VERY tragic, though the manga is worlds better than the anime. Still...worth watching.

I was lucky enough to have a friend describe enough of it to me, without giving any real spoilers, to let me know I don't want to see it.

Shuffle! caught me completely off guard, though. It was all happy and cute, then it turns out a chick is a psycho and some other drama happens. I felt like it did a 180 when I wasn't looking.


I'm not entirely sure if it counts as tragic, but I'd recommend giving Air a try. AKA "Air TV". I cried at the end of that anime.

I thought the same thing about shuffle as well. I stopped watching it when she became all psycho n stuff. I have this habit of not finishing shows when i feel betrayed or something i dont want happens, unless im just so much into the show. Same with seasons. I didn't watch season 2 of Shakugan no Shana for months just because the first half of the first episode of s2 was soooo depressing and messed up after the great ending to the first season... but i finally forced myself to watch it and i found season two to be pretty good.

Clannad final episode did pull some bullshit, but it also had some of the best parts in the series.

OT: Higurashi
MAYBE Bokurano, I honestly laughed every time something "tragic" happened. And I've seen all the twists coming...
Don't watch the Umineko anime, Deen ruined it. Watch the visual novels.
I thought Paranoia Agent was sort of tragic.
Mind Game is almost tragic. It's so happy, it's tragic. Hard to describe....
Heard from a friend that Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is a really tragic comedy, haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

4Kids' dub of One Piece was pretty tragic.

That made me laugh my ass off.

OT: Regardless what anyone says, the saddest anime of all time is Now and then, Here and there. I watch every once in a while to remind myself of this. Trust me, by the final episode, you'll be crying your ass off.

Also, some recommendations are Shadow Star Narutaru ( Manga only), Angel Beats ( I didn;t really find it depressing, but other people do), Both FMA animes, and one Piece.

I'm seconding the people who recommended Cowboy Bebop.

While it might not seem tragic at first glance (some stuff is downright hilarious), the characters, their history and their development during the show (it's mostly episodic, but there's a red line) is very tragic indeed.

Some episodes are tragic by themselves (episode 20, Pierrot le Fou, good gods...) but the main story arch trumps them all.

Hah, couldn't be more wrong. It's just a really weird, silly comedy. The darkest thing about it is the intro; other than that, it's Bobobo set in an all-girl high school.

I'd have to agree with you on the Higurashi front, though I would have categorized it as "goddamn creepy" rather than "tragic"... still very good though.

The anime is a bit different from the manga... in that it had to be TONED DOWN quite a bit. The manga is probably the most depressing thing I've read since I read Black Beauty back in middle school XD

To sum it up: It's like EVA but even more bleak. To put it a bit longer: Fifteen kids are contracted to pilot a giant robot to battle against other robots. Each robot is piloted by other kids... from other universes. The loser of each battle has its entire universe wiped out. The winner of each battle dies as well--because the robot is powered by life-force. But it's far less about the robot battles and far more about the children involved in piloting it; their lives, their dreams, their families, why they are the way they are, and why they are willing to die to pilot this robot. Each child is unique and built up as a character with a rich (often tragic) history... and it's depressing even when the complete monster characters die.

Ditto Narutaru (another work by the same author). Narutaru is possibly even more depressing, though. (The anime of this one stops about 1/3 of the way through the manga.)

Eh, Monster's really more of a thriller/mystery/medical drama than anything--though there are some pretty sad parts in it.

A couple more recommendations:

Uta~Kata (seems like a regular magical girl show at first--until it becomes a story about misanthrophy and environmentalism vs progress rather than the power of love or whatever)

Evangelion is tragic I suppose. well... I'm not quite sure really. It is a total mindfuck though.

This, but don't be turned off by the show itself. It's the movie (coupled with the last two episodes) that are a total mindfuck. The series is pretty subpar imo, but it's definitely worth it for the ending.

I hear "Kanon" is good (at least the later eps are).
"full moon Wo sagashite" was... disturbing... great though.
"hoshi no koe" is good too and it's only like 30mins long, plus it's sci-fi, does require a litle knowledge of Cosmic science in order to fully understand.
"sky crawlers" sorta tragic, it's interesting and really beautiful. But it's a feature length movie and i'm not sure where you can find the subbed version.
"Now and then, here and there" fucking disturbing, reminds me of half life 2 a bit, good as well.
