I like turn-based strategy games, but I am not any good at them. Do any of you know of a TBS game that is good for learning the basics of the genre?

I have played Pokemon, but I always thought of it as more of an RPG than TBS.

Depends on what he means. Pokemon wouldn't really help someone learn the basics of a more advanced turn-based game like, say, Advance Wars.

Advance wars is a simple place to start. Move on to Fire Emblem and then finally to big games like Civ4 and GalCiv 2.

Advance Wars is fairly easy to follow, especially if you do the tutorial included in most versions of it.

Double ninja'd. Advance Wars is great - check out Advance Wars: Dual Strike if you have a DS, and if you like it you can move onto Days of Ruin.

Well Advance Wars: Dual Strike for the DS was a very fun TBS. The Civ games are good too.

My expertise is more with RTS', sorry.

I would say Civ Rev on easy is very good to beginners to the TBS genre.

I thought the 'new' DS Fire Emblem game was a bit of a step back in complexity from the GBA Fire Emblem games personally. At least it felt that way. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance was also pretty easy I thought as long as you levelled up Ike plenty and didn't fall trap to the Jagan character.

my good sir Medieval Total War is an excellent TBS and it also has an RTS type element to it

what you do is its the middle ages and you select an Empire to control (as a beginner I'd highly recommend the Byzantines if you do get it) then you work to balance out your economy so you can raise an army and conquer all of europe -or- you perform various legendary actions like building major landmarks or making a province one of the most powerful in the world depending on your game mode I there is an RTS element because when you invade another country you can personally command your army and tell them what to do (no bases or anything just your hundreds of troops that you initially invade with) It can get difficult but the tutorials do a nice job of holding your hand in your beginning steps I managed to win the conquest with the Danes and they only start with 60 spearmen and your kings unit of Knights, the key is to not over extend your army and keep your populace happy (which is done by keeping a large garrison in a province hence not over extending an army)

I do prefer the arabic armies because their holy war (the Jihad) lets you launch it against an province you have had where the christian armies Crusades can only be sent to the holy land

hope this helps ye

Civilization games or Galactic Civilizations II

I realize that these 'can' be hard but they will give your brain a boner if you play them trust me.

Civilization 3 is imo the best Civ game.

Although if you like science fiction, check out Alpha Centauri by the same guy. It's basically the same as Civ.
