Alright, for one of my classes I need to write a 10-12 page essay on a topic of my choosing. The problem is, it needs to be a problem solution essay. This means I need to find a problem apparent in today's society and write about it and a solution for it.

My friend is doing her's on women's weight disorders, so that's an example.

So, if you would be so kind as to post a suggestion, I would heavily appreciate it.

Why celebrities and America's obsession with them is ruining everything as we know it! (And how to fix it...)

Damn you, you ninja.
I was going to suggest this but for England. But then again the OP is American so that wouldn't work.

Take Aby_Z's choice, OP.

What class is it? It might give me more of a general idea.

I was always a smartass in my school, so what I would have done with that assignment is make the topic of my essay on the topic of essays. Just make up a problem like "Essays, a poor replacement for competent teaching skills." or something along those lines... if they aren't asking for a bibliography and references then you're good, just BS your 12 pages and have fun with it.

Terrorism
The Jonas Brothers(why they are the problem and how to solve it)
Twilight(why its brain washing every goddamn chick between 10 and 16 years old. and how to fix it)
The economy

I'm trying to help haha. I was just thinking of problems I always hear on the news and stuff I think is a problem.

Problem- Global Warming
Solution- Using hybrid cars instead of SUVs

Problem- Repeat Sexual Offenders
Solution- Harsher punishments for 1st time offenders

Problem- Fat People
Solution- Ban food with high fructose corn syrup, and make gym memberships easily affordable for everyone. No excuses not to work out!
Copied from someone's Yahoo! answers.
Global Warming is something a lot of people choose to ***** at so if you want something easy yet not so unique that's probably the one to go for.

You could go through a ridonkulous list of reasons why our society would be better if we had a lower population.

The problem- People don't put enough thought into what they wear, especially their pants.
Solution- Proper Education system that allows people to shut out the media, and learn about pants.

funny you mention it my english class is writing a paper on what to do with poverty in america right now. I'm intensely conservative so i believe the poor have only themselves to blame, but that's just my opinion.

I'd like to second this: being a smartass in an essay really does help the time to just fly by since you're basically writing a parody of your own essay. It's a lot of fun to do and you should give it a shot.

If that fails, you could always write an essay parodying an actual world issue. For example, I was given a prompt telling me to discuss the effects of childhood obesity on society or something like that. Instead of going with the side they obviously wanted me to go with (the negatives of childhood obesity), I went ahead and talked about how obesity will save the economy because of the increase in fast food revenue. It was a surprising amount of fun to write.

And its also incredible educational, perhaps more so than the actual intended purpose of the essay. While everyone else will probably do research on their topic and come up with a bland essay that more than likely shares a topic with others in the class; you will end up doing the same research but on an obscure out-of-the-box topic that, since you had fun writing it, is probably a compelling read. Who makes more money, the journalist or the novelist?

I say keep it fairly simple and free of any major politics, so I would stay away of healthcare or national policies.

Maybe talk about the rising cost of energy, talk about ways to make energy cheaper or to conserve energy as a solution.
