So I'm getting a good bit of money from scholarships next week and I need a computer for school, but I want something that can run games respectably too.

Currently I'm looking at the Alienware M11x, which is the newest model and has pretty awesome specs and a decent price tag after I customized it.

So, any ideas or suggestions, commentary on the M11x?

I'm fairly certain your best bet would be to get something other than Alienware...

Give us a bit more info on your exact setup for it. Which size M11x were you going for? Etc...

Could you provide a link to it?

I'd say look around a bit more, you may find somthing better.

Otherwise I'd say go for it.

Well after customization it's going to have a Intel® Core?2 Duo SU7300 1.3GHz (3MB Cache) processor, Windows 7 64 bit, 4GB of ram, a 320GB hard drive, and the 1GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 335M graphics card. It's an 11.6 inch netbook. At that configuration it's $1300.

My budget is around $1400, so it seems right, I was looking at the HP mini 311, but this thing trounces it.

In terms of laptops, that's pretty damn good. You might be able to find something a tad cheaper (maybe around $1000) but nothing that would be that small. Plus, I think the M11x looks cool.

I'd recommend browsing Newegg.com for gaming laptops and seeing if there's anything you like more. Otherwise, go for it.

If you can, try to get more RAM. While not as bad as Vista, Windows 7 works best with a minimum of 2GB of RAM, and since it's 64-bit, there's no practical limit to the amount of RAM usable by the system (actually, it's like 256GB of RAM, so no worries unless you've got some super-massive server.)

Also, see if you can get a slightly faster Core 2 CPU. Even an extra 2 MHz will make a huge difference.

6GB of ram was like $200 more, so that would put it out of my price range, and that was the fastest processor offered at the moment. I didn't upgrade to 64 bit btw, that just what comes with it.

I use a Dell PC for what it's worth, and it's always been good to me, it does run games fairly well, although, possibly becuase of the upgraded graphics card i use...

There's a link to it. Oh and it comes with steam and portal pre-installed. Included in the price I gave you guys was Office home and student for school and tax and next day shipping, so without all that it's much cheaper.

You can skip the processor upgrade from Pentium to C2D unless you need to run virtual machines. Both CPU offerings are the same architecture and clockspeed.
