So, after getting back from vacation I have a massive urge to play a really good RPG or RTS and I am searching for a good one to get. That said, I'm hoping you guys can help me pick a really good one. I am not too terribly picky as far as what I'll play but I'd prefer it to not be too linear and have good gameplay (I don't mind if its not a new game). Any suggestions?

One of the greatest RPGs ever made: Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn.

Seriously, it is better than most modern RPGs, just beware of steep learning curve.

On the RTS side of things, if you want a good (the best/most active) online scene, strong campaign and good mod support, Starcraft II forver my friend. Starcraft II forever.

PC, Console?
PC: RTS- Shogun:Total War 2(the new one I think) is supposedly epic.
RPG- The Witcher 2

Console: RTS I would have to say Supreme Commander 2 or C&C 4
RPG I would suggest Fallout New Vegas or JRPG route you need to play Tales of Vesperia. It's awesome.
Thanks a ton for your advice! I currently own a Wii, Xbox 360 and a PC, though I'm most inclined towards my PC for these things as controllers seem to make these genres a good bit more frusterating (with exceptions, of course.) I've heard of The Witcher 2 but I keep hearing that the game's confusing and has quite clunky controls. Still, I'm considering getting it. That said, I actually had to look up the other games (I guess I'm out of the loop) and they look pretty awesome

Why stop at one game? Go to gog.com and pick out several. You could probably find at least half a dozen titles, if not more, for the price of a single new game.

I actually think I might get Witcher because I'm more in the mood for Fantasy than Sci-Fi. Also, I already own SC2 and its amazing. That said, I'm still open to suggestions and I'm strong considering getting Baldur's Gate 2 as well after looking it up (I've got a weakness for RPG's where you have more than 1 hero (especially if they let you pick/customize your whole team.))

Thanks for your responses!

If you like making/customising your whole team and like the look of Baldur's Gate II you might want to consider the Icewind Dale series.

Same developers, less emphasis on story (which is what makes BGII one of the best) and more on combat. You are encouraged to create an entire part of six PCs from the offset. Pretty fun hack'n'slash/tactical RPG.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is one of my favorite RPG's of all time. Amazing story with multiple endings all depending on what class and what choices you make during the game. It's a bit old now, but the graphics still hold up fairly well and it's a bargain on steam nowadays. I've played it through three times and have had a different experience each time. Also, the soundtrack FANTASTIC.

If that's not to your liking, I would recommend Black Isle's masterpiece, Planescape: Torment. Depending on how you play, this could be called a RPG/RTS. Basically, if you don't use sound strategy in battles, you will have your ass handed to you.

Also this, but if you get BG2, I would also get Baldurs Gate 1 (with the Sword Coast expansion). You can then play through BG1 in the BG2 engine. Why? Because the BG2 engine allows you to play more classes, customize the screen rez and makes it a more enjoyable experience.
