So, I was making home movies (AVI) with my sisters digital camera.
Now I want to put them on a dvd so my aunt who doesnt have a computer can watch them on her DVD player.
But it seems the only kind of DVD I can burn is a data disk...which doesnt help because she still would require a computer.....

If anyone can help me I would appreciate it alot.

Well you'd need software that can convert and burn video files to DVD, but I don't use those, so I couldn't really direct you towards a particular one... Surely AnyDVD has such functionality, you could always google that and see. I think it's 29$.
I'm pretty sure Windows Media Player can burn to CD's, but I only tried that with music. I'd assume it would work for video though.

So unless he's running a Mac he should be fine.

I'd suggest trying Avi2Dvd. [http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAvi2Dvd.php?b2=1] If I recall, that was pretty good when I used it once before. And it's freeware. Freeware's always nice. That will convert it to DVD format, but I'm not entirely sure whether it will burn it or not. If not, just burn what it gives you as a data disc. The VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directories. That should do the trick. As long as you're burning those files properly, just having it burned as a data disc won't keep it from playing in a DVD player.

Though, if by some chance Avi2Dvd gives you an ISO file, you'll need to burn it as an image, but I don't think it does. If it does and you don't know how to burn an image, tell me and I can help you out on that.

Yes it can definitely make a video CD, but can it author a DVD readable in any standard set-top DVD player? 'Cause that's all his Grandmother has...
My burned CDs worked fine in CD players, I don't see why it shouldn't be the same for DVDs.

DVDs are encrypted, CDs are not. Burned DVD compatibility with set-top players is more akin to playing a CD with MP3s on it in a regular CD player. (i.e: Newer and/or more full-featured DVD/CD players can often play VCDs/MP3 CDs, but quite a lot of them can't.)
Ah, well I've never tried burning a DVD so I wouldn't know, but thanks for clearing that up.

WinAVI for direct conversion of AVI - DVD-Video

DVD-Lab Pro to make sexy menus for said video

You can also use Nero 8 or 9, which is the basically the definitive DVD suite (imo) and can do anything you need. It's what I use regularly for this kind of stuff, and is easy to use.
