I've been confined to a laptop for the past 2 years for all PC gaming purposes, partially because I had no desk in my room to place a PC on and partially because my sister has now taken over my old PC. However, I now have a desk in my room with plenty of space to put a PC on it. Sadly, I've never had to bother with the specs of PCs ever since my dad dealt with that when I got my last PC and my laptop has only ever been used for World of Warcraft and Sims 3. I've stuck with Xbox so far.

I'm absolutely thrilled to be getting back into PC gaming so I decided that, y'know what, I'll try and build a PC that will last me a couple of years. Now, my lack of knowledge about specs is somewhat of a barrier here. I know websites to buy components to build a PC, I've looked through them and it'd be all good and fine if only I knew how to tell how good a graphics card or a processor is. I know about clock speed for processors, that higher is better , etc. but that's pretty much the extent of my knowledge. I also know that a high price does not necessarily imply high quality, so this is where you guys come in.

Is there a website which would allow me to properly compare graphics cards and processors without needing to know all the fine details or have an extensive knowledge?

I use Anandtech.com. From their website, there is a bench tab. Click on that, then click GPU 2011 and you can choose like two graphics cards to compare benchmarks.

tomshardware.com is good too for reviews for computer parts as well.
