I Need JRPGs like FF VII-X!!

The original Grandia (PS1) is available for download from PSN. It's set in a more modernized version of your typical warriors-and-monsters RPG world, where people rely on both technology and magic, much like in the Final Fantasy games you mention. I should note, however, that the game world itself does include its share of green hills and ancient ruins like, say, Oblivion, but there's no king or other feudal bigwig commanding you around. The protagonist's goal is simply to explore the world, so he mostly just decides for himself where to go next.

Anything with the Shin Megami Tensei label. Final Fantasy VI is kind of in between a medieval and contemporary/futuristic setting, so try it if you haven't. Tactics is full medieval but avoids the usual cliches.

Also, give Shin Megami Tensie:Nocturne a try

I recommend MOST Shin Megami Tensei games, especially Persona.

Both are western made RPGs with JRPG mechanics. Neither has a generic fantasy setting, so you should be good there.

You can get both of them off of GOG.com for cheap, and they have very low system requirements due to their age.
