Thanks for the suggestions AC10, but they're either to long, or have vocals. :(

What do you think of Heron Blue by Sun Kil Moon? It's the trailer song to Gears of War 3 and is very well written http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTfmSf5I2uM
thanks for the suggestion, but it's far to short, and contains vocals.

-Youkoso! NI NHK soundtracks (trust me they are awesome and lots of instrumentals) the bands name is Pearl Kyoudai

hope this helps :)
This is a great pick. I'm putting it in the pile just because it is so melancholic but different from the other (working) suggestions. :)
wow great to be able to help. i still have tons more since i enjoy melancholic and peaceful music, but unfortunately almost all of em are longer than you needed.

EDIT : found 2 more from the Machinarium soundtrack. i dont know if its melancholic for you but for extra reference..

Well first off the reason you avoid longer tracks can be bit odd. When you easily can cut out from longer track and add fade-in and fade-out to make it fit what ever length you want. A free program like audacity should be able to do this easily.

Anyway 2 tracks from 2 very known animes (if I do the embed thing right).

I've got some great suggestions. :) I'm going to catch a nap, and come back at this fresh. If people want to keep up the suggestions, I will look over them. But remember the requirments, because they are inflexible.

requirements
No vocals,
In the 2 minute to 3 minute range (no editing),
melancholic atmosphere,
([em]NEW[/em]) Nothing to iconic.

May have already been posted, but "Moonlight Sonata" by Mozart
Um, what? By Mozart? The fuck are you talking about?

Anyway, I suggest the soundtrack from In Bruges (this track is 1:51 long, but the video has 40 seconds of silence at the end):

Possibly:

Go through the Halo 3: ODST soundtrack.
^What he said.

My suggestions:

Although its about 5 seconds short of your requirement. Could probably make it work though.

There's also Siege of Madrigal. Its a Myth song but appears in all the Halo games.

Again, doesn't exactly meet your requirements, but screw it, its a beautiful song dammit!

Look no further than the haunting lonliness of the "Silent Hill 2- OST". Assuming you can track down a track or two it has a somber pace which practically oozes isolation and emptiness with a tinge of introspection and outbursts of fear. VERY moving as a work.

I'm working on a project that I'm trying to tie in an atmosphere of melancholy. I've got a silent video that I'm overlapping with melancholic music. I wanted to use Heavy Rains "Painful Memories" theme [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGzwir0Yezk], but it's to short (1 minute and 29 seconds). An ideal time length would have been 2 minutes and 10 seconds to 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

I was hoping people here might know of a thing or two.

Requirments;
no vocals,
must be in the 2 minute range. (no editing)
Must have an air of melancholy.

Maybe the OST from Let The Right one In, specifically the song Oscar in Love.

It's 2:22 though...

I know it is a fair bit too long but requiem for a dream is pretty melancholy.

Under your parameters (2:10-2:30, no vocals), this is the best I could come up with from my library.

I was trying to find an instrumental version of this song, but had no luck
