Damn, I can't really help because this mainly deals with sub-genres I've never explored (unlike my dad has literally thousands of cds)

Right now, I'm looking to hear anything that sounds like Norther, Red Fang, Dark Tranquility, or Devildriver.
Well since you mentioned devildriver ever heard of dez' old band?

I've plugged myself into a few online heavy metal communities, and I do fancy myself as an amateur reviewer of metal albums. Here's a few bands that are a little more obscure that I have found that I really, really like:

Sabbat. A British thrash metal band. They were relatively short lived, but their first two albums are really great.

Sabbat. A Japanese band. Try not to get them confused with the British one. They started around the same time as the British band, have released more albums; but being Japanese, they are a bit more obscure. They play black/thrash metal with large amounts of Venom influence with a nice oriental flair to go with it. They're responsible for my favorite album of all time: The Dwelling, but since that album only has a single hour long song, here's a shorter one.

Nokturnal Mortum. A pagan black metal band from Ukraine. I have lots of love for these guys. Their latest two, Weltanshauung and The Voice of Steel, are really epic.

Just to mix things up, here's something with clean vocals: Wuthering Heights. One of my favorite power metal bands.

I think that's enough for now.

You made a list of stoner metal bands without Kyuss [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ff9bWsc2UOo]?
'Cause they're not metal. :p They're desert rock, an offshoot of stoner rock. Kinda like Queens of the Stone Age. :)

But yeah, I could've mentioned 'em as well, lol.
Hmmm... kinda a grey area, Kyuss are definitely a fair bit heavier than QotSA. I guess you're probably right though.

Not particularly what you've asked for, but you might like Psychostick [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychostick].

They aren't a very serious band; for instance, this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y7d0YriPO0] song is about hating all of the people you know on Facebook:

Well, the genre's you like, I'm not particular fond of, but I'll toss in Blind Guardian, they're power metal and completely epic. There's also Seven Kingdoms if you want something a little more thrash-like.

I don't think Cynic has been mentioned yet; it's sort of a classic technical death metal band--for nearly a decade and a half, they only had one album out (Focus), and it was just over a half hour long, but it was reaaally good. Since they came back with Traced in Air, their music has been a lot less metal, but it's still great, for the most part. For example, here's a song from their newest release:

Still good; still as proggy as ever, but a lot less heavy, to the disappointment of a lot of their long-time fans.

If you like fantasy epics, you're in luck with Rhapsody of Fire.
Actually, they are called only Rhapsody, just pointing that out :D

Sadly aside from that tidbit i dont really have any suggestions aside from what are already said or well known to begin with.
Touche good sir but I must correct you as well because they were formally known as Rhapsody. They are now called Rhapsody of Fire *points to website.* :)

Well, beyond the very obvious ones I can think of one band you've probably not heard of:

Actually, guitarist Luca Turilli (I hope that's spelled right) ditched RoF and is starting to make music under the Rhapsody name again while keyboardist Alex and vocalist Fabio are continuing on with RoF.

Hmmm...never heard of that before. I'm rather disappointed Luca isn't making a sequel to Prophet of the Last Eclipse instead.

I'm more into metalcore than straight metal. It's a little less cheesey than regular metal. If you fancy trying it some good bands are Of Mice & Men, The Devil Wears Prada, Bring Me The Horizon, We Came As Romans.
