Basically, I have my AS levels in a couple weeks, and I'm struggling to revise. Every time I pick up a book I get distracted, even if I tell myself my life will be a misery when I fail. Ashamed of my lack of self control here, any ideas how I can motivate myself?

go to a coffee shop, take your books, get a tea/coffee/whatever you like and some cake, find a comfy chair then sit there and read. trust me, it works a treat.

I revise by doing 1 hour of revision then let yourself watch telly or play a game for a bit. Not sure on a motivation tactic though, except for "If I revise I can watch telly / play games"

Cold showers while you tell yourself you are a miserable failure, a waste of human flesh. You will never amount to anything if don't get up and study.
That sort of thing works for me.

Thats not having an effect on me at all, I'm used to being a waste of oxygen by now.

my, that is DEPRESSING
personally i'd say that you should do it and try to beat someone
that way you have a goal
(it helps if you think they are almost perfect)

Just remember if you do badly in these exams then you may very well end up a homeless drug addicted tramp in later life, so no pressure to revise. I am of course joking, I recently finished my Standard Grade exams (Scottish exams for 15/16 year olds), and I basically revised for an hour, then had to stop mainly because my attention spam is only about 10 minutes normally so sitting revising for an hour was like my Everest...

It could also be that you're not revising in the most effective way for you. I can't revise by reading the book for example, I have to say things out loud for them to stick, because I remember spoken words better than written ones.

Taking breaks as other people have mentioned is another great idea. If you try and do a 3 hour slog, your mind will simply shut down and refuse to play. Do 30-40 minutes, then take a 15 minute break, grab something to eat or drink and then go back to it.

Eat a decent breakfast too, with slow release energy. Whole-grain foods are idea for this, because it takes a long time to digest, so you keep your energy up all day.

I agree with this completely, although personally I swap 'coffee shop' for 'LUU Juice Bar' and 'tea/coffee' for 'hot chocolate'. Either way, it works great. Very soothing, quiet and relaxing (plus our juice bar plays soft jazz and easy listening over the speakers quietly, so it's an added bonus :D).

People are capable of absorbing more knowledge in the morning, I believe the peak is around 10-ish. So, if you have the time for it: try to study in the morning. Not what you call great in combination with wild, alcohol flooded nights, but it works.

But, it has to be said, skipping those nights sucks.

Study with a friend or someone you know so it isn't so boring and you can set yourself tasks or compete. Thats how I used to get through it in high school.

This won't help but...

For my Standard Grades in which I still have one left (int2 computing) I did no revision. This year's papers were incredible gifts. Then again I've never revised for anything. My brain works weird.

If you need to revise desperately then try doing it under a relaxed atmosphere such as a revision class.

Make a schedule, and set alarm clocks.
Loud alarm clocks.
Clocks, as in plural.

I remember when I was revising for my AS Levels a couple of years ago (they're not as hard as you think they'll be, by the way), and I had two strategies that worked.

1. Have a cycle of work. By this, I mean revise for, say, half an hour, have a ten minute break, then do another half and hour, have a ten minute break. Then revise for twenty minutes, and afterwards go and d something else for say, an hour. Then, do the same thing over again. This was recommended to me by some "revision expert" that came in to our school. Anyway, it worked.

2. Draw, be creative. Merely looking at things only requires you to see the information, but writing it down or drawing a little cartoon about it forces your brain to process that information. Make a list of every major point/fact/statistic etc you want to remember and do a little cartoon relating to it next to it. It works, really.

Finally, get off the internet.

Same here, but I've started to study a bit for final exams...
Like when the exam is about everything you have done for the entire year, it helps if I study a while.
As for self-motivation try a bit of everything. Change the time that you study, have a punish system one day, and then have a motivation system the other. I think that should work, but I'm no expert since I should currently be working...
Then again, the essay isn't due till monday, so I COULD do it on sunday...
