lol u so funny.

I think you meant Cormac McCarthy. If you did, then you deserve the thread.
No i didn't, never read that author. Are they any good?

And no matter what you like to read you will enjoy Pratchett. It's like saying everyone likes air, It's impossible to hate.
If you are familiar with the film No Country For Old Men or the upcoming Viggo Mortensen film The Road, he wrote the books those were based on. The guy also has a Genius Grant from the US government for literature.

I've know a few who dislike them but I tend to file those type of people in the "retard" file

Read The Belgariad.
It's actually a few books put together, each over 250 pages, and a damned good read.
I second this. This series is probably one of the best series that I've ever read. It would be an excellent choice for sure.

Also, check out any of the Death Gate Cycle novels by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. They've got a good fantasy feel. The story itself, while having a serious tone, always manages to throw in quirky humour here and there to lighten things up.

There are also the Earthsea novels as well, by Ursula leGuin. Very excellent.

If you're in to classics, anything by Jane Austen is amazing, although I have to say that Pride and Prejudice would have to be my favourite work done by her.

Last, but not least, there are the works of the Bronte sisters; Wuthering Heights, and Jane Eyre.

That should be enough to keep you occupied.

I don't dislike Pratchett (though I hate that name), but unless he has a Genius Grant from his country of birth just for writing books really, really good, then it is mathematically impossible for him to be better than McCarthy.

If it hasn't been mentioned, I would reccomend the Da Vinci Code or Angels and Demons. Both by Dan Brown

You'd think so, but you'd be wrong.
I've never cared for Mccarthy that much.
By contrast, I've read nearly everything Terry Pratchett has written. Which is a lot of books. To be so prolific and consistantly and constantly so funny and entertaining, he deserves some kind of genius award.

For example of Pratchett's greatness: I am 15 and own all books not including special Watch and Vampire diaries because they are hard as hell to find.

Made me enjoy reading.

Friend borrowed one of his books and refused to give it back. First time I ever punched someone. In the face.

Well thanks for pissing on my parade there, friend.
But to be fair, that is personal opinion. Also, I don't think McCarthy was ever trying to be funny. And he still has the genius grant, so all you've proven is that you don't like some of the greatest American and English language literature to be written in the past century.

Again, thats a subjective opinion. I wasn't suggesting McCarthy was trying to be funny.
I read Poe, Lovecraft, Jane Austen, Dickens, Swift, and so on, so I appreciate good literature. I just didn't find McCarthy's books to be all that special.

I did a report somewhere in HS on Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, but I wouldn't suggest it. Not really that great of a book unless you're just generally into the era and probably too pro drug for 10th grade. Hrm, Jack Kerouac is one of my favorites. I personally like Dharma Bums, but a lot of people seem to favor On The Road. Someone already said Catch 22, but I would caution you on that one too. It isn't very easy to read. Well, at least it wasn't for me and I read it when I was about 17.

I doubt your teacher would appreciate Palahniuk, but pretty much any novel by him is amazing. I'm sure you've seen Fight Club, that was originally a novel by him. I think they're also making a movie of Choke. The only problem here is that you're in 10th grade and just about all of these novels have a lot of sex and drugs. Not sure if it is appropriate.

So yeah, pretty much anything I suggested wouldn't work. I didn't do a lot of work in school, but I did read a lot of books back then. They're just a little "bad" for school. Unless your teacher is some sort of crazy hippy, that is.

Edit: Holy shit, I forgot. The Great Gatsby. If they haven't made you read that or don't plan on it, then do it. That is one of the ONLY "recommended reading" type books I ever enjoyed in HS. That and Ethan Frome, but that isn't long enough.

Ender's game by Orson Scott Card is a book i really enjoyed doing a book report on. I'm not sure if it's over 250 pages though.

I'm surprised no one has suggested '1984' yet. I'm not sure exactly if its over 250 pages so double check.

It's a really good read that makes you rethink the way you view the world (Like does 2+2 really equal 4?)And is so possible you even see signs of it happening in todays society (cameras everywhere). Also chances are good you'll have to read it for school in a year or so anyway so get a head start ;D

Any book that has been later made into a movie (except Stormbreaker, worst book ever, in my opinion).

They were probably made into a movie for a reason and the book is always much better than the movie.
