When I went to play garrys mod today, it came up with an error saying I can only have one instance of the game at a time, but nothing was was open, so I dont really know what to do. So if anyone knows whats wrong, any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Restart your computer, see if that fixes it.

You may just have an old instance that hasn't filly closed down, you could shut down the process via the Task manager, but a good restart never did anyone any harm.

I'll ask the obvious.

Did you restart your machine and then try? Is the message one instance of the game or one instance of Steam open?

This happened to me after I had one of the steam apps dump me out after an install and it turns out even though I had closed the steam client, there was a process still running (I can't remember the process name, once I killed the process I was able to restart.)

My guess is there is a process still actively running connected with Steam or Gary's mod that prevents it from starting up (i.e. starting that same process again)

Just a guess though. Not a ton of info to go off on.

Open task manager and go to the processes tab.

Scroll down until you see "Steam.exe *32", or something along those lines without the quotes.

Click it then click the "End Process" button at the bottom. That should fix your problem.

It said there was another instance of the game, I checked the task manager, and there was nothing there, and thats why I am confused.

Yeah I tried the task manager, that didnt work.
restart your computer, don't trust the task manager.
Probably the best idea at this point.

Also keep in mind task manager has multiple tabs, sounds like you checked the application tab and not the processes tab. No matter, I am with AC10 here, restart and see what it does for you.

Often what happens is that the Steam client is updated while you're running it, so you're running an older copy... or that there's a big sale on and all of it's servers slow. Usually closing Steam itself helps but often a good reset clears the cache. Given AvP's release though, it may just be snowed under.
