Check out George Orwell's 1984, if you haven't already.
Precisely.

Also, try reading something by Lovecraft, or playing Call of Cthulhu (either the PC/XBox game or the table-top RPG, both are excellent)

In Bruges wasn't dark or gritty, I thought. It was actually a lot of fun.

Warhammer (40K and normal) come to mind. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is excellent as well.

How about a bumhole?

Just kidding.

Try reading up on some of the Warhammer 40k universe, there's some pretty gritty stuff in there, especially with the Space Marines.

go read House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski. I've read it twice and after both times, i stayed home from everything because i was amazed that they were all in colour. also, it made me afraid of hallways. it really messes with you on various degrees. Go read the book, i promise that you will not be disappointed.

A graphic novel called "Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth" comes to mind.

Then there's another graphic novel called "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac."

There's this comic series called Bizenghast sold in the manga sections.

If you want animation: & you can watch some of these on YouTube.

Perfect Blue, Shadow Star Narutaru, Hellsing, Twilight of the Dark Master, Lily CAT, Petshop of Horrors, Alien Nine, Demon City Shinjuku, Elfen Lied, Blood Reign: Curse of the Youma, Baoh, BioHunter, all 10 of the Black Jack movies, 3x3 Eyes, Akira (hated it) Evangelion (really hated it), Vampire Hunter D, Ogre Slayer, Iria, Weiss Kreuz...that's all I can think of for now.

For movies which are dark and gritty I recommend `saw`, especially the first two, and the two `Hostel` movies.

For something so dark and gritty that you will want to peel off your skin and bleach your eyeballs just to feel clean again, I reccomend Cannibal Holocaust (banned until recently) and `Eraser Head`. I will warn you though, once you have watched these movies, you will wish that you hadn`t

For anime, Baccano (which was reviewed recently on this site somewhere) and Ghost in the shell 2 innocence (maybe not so gritty though, but pretty pretty dark)

You're in it. I call it life.

But seriously, read the night angel series by Brent Weeks. It couples darkness and gritiness with epic battles and pure win.

This is my favorite series of computer games ever. And as Yahtzee has said, the only series to do stealth right.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thief:_The_Dark_Project
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thief_II:_The_Metal_Age
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thief:_Deadly_Shadows

And they are making a fourth game, which is being produced by Square Enix.

One of the other threads mentioned voice acting. This game has some of the best voice acting I have ever heard. Especially Garrett. I would kill to have his voice.

Lol, wow Cannibal Holocaust. Seriously, I wish I hadn't watched that movie, it's so severely fucked up I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. I think that goes a little past the whole "dark and gritty" thing. That's essentially just pornography. That being said, I'd probably watch that movie again for some reason completely unknown to me. Possibly because of the permanent damage it's done to my psyche.

Yeah, it's been said a few times, but for god sakes go watch Fight Club. One of my all time favourite movies. Oh, and District 9 is totally undeserving of all the praise it's been getting (slipped that in there for the sake of pissing off the numerous fan boys of that film that populate this website)

The Mist
Children of Men
The Mist is by King, isn't it? Yea, it was kinda cliche, but it was cool. I liked it.
Chidren of men is a great movie about the dark corners of mans psyche.

And my addition to this thread would be Pitch Black. Easily Vin's best movie ever.
