Well, if you're still interested, let me just think on this for a minute.

In no particular order:

1. American Beauty
2. Fight Club
3. The Prestige
4. A Clockwork Orange
5. The Shawshank Redemption
6. Amelie
7. Let the Right One In
8. The Last Samurai
9. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
10. The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Keep in mind that the list fluctuates with my mood. But those films will always be among my favourites, no matter how much 'fluctuation' takes place.

There are a couple I kept thinking about but I decided not to put up. Narrowing down favorites is tough.
Might I reccommend 100 top tens for each genre? (Top 100 comedies, Top 100 Sci-fi/Action, Etc.)
It's a bit mean of me to ask people to narrow favourites. I've done it myself and it's tough. Just to show that I can also be mean to myself. Here's my top 10.

01) Shawshank Redemption
02) Inception
03) Oldboy
04) The Dark Knight
05) Watchmen
06) Children of Men
07) Fight Club
08) Ink
09) Natural Born Killers
10) Heat

As for the genre idea, a few friends have suggested that to me as well. For what i'm doing though it's not about genre but bridging a gap between Critics Top 100, and what would be classed as a general Top 100. But I might still do the genre films breakdown in an appendix. But any ideas people have are also welcomed.
Now that is a list! all great movies none are comedys but all are well written movies with great concepts good direction and well are great in everyway just none are light hearted all are pritty serous for the most part

All right, I'll bite, and I'm going down the genre route because otherwise I'm not convinced there's any fair way to do it - I'd be hard pressed to say that any of the following 'bests' is 'better' than any other.

Best comedy: Some Like it Hot
Runner-up: La Cage Aux Folles
Honourable Mention: Groundhog Day

Best Action/Adventure: Die Hard
Runner-up: Raiders of the Lost Ark
Honourable Mention: Assault on Precinct 13

Best General-story-thingie: Toto The Hero
Runner-up: Shawshank Redemption
Honourable Mention: American Beauty

Best Sci-Fi/Superhero/Fantasy: Aliens
Runner-up: Star Wars (ANH)
Honourable Mention: Terminator

Best Musical: Singin' in the Rain
Runner-up: Chicago
Honourable Mention: Dancer in the Dark

You see, once you get started it's really hard to stop. There's a whole lot more I'd love to include - The Dark Knight, Memento, Pulp Fiction, Ocean's 11 - all movies I'd call 'perfect' in the sense that they do what they do exactly right.

Off the top of my head and in the order they came to me:

Stranger Than Paradise (Jarmusch 1984)
Taxi Driver (Scorsese 1977)
Scorpio Rising (Anger 1965)
Double Indemnity (Wilder 1944)
Get Carter (1971)

Metropolis (Lang 1927)
2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick 1968)
Pusher III: I Am The Angel Of Death (Winding Refn 2005)
Bonnie And Clyde (Penn 1967)
Made In Britain (Clarke 1982)

EDIT: I would recommend looking at the British Film Institute and American Film Institute lists of the "best films ever".

That is where you are wrong. After i've got as many lists on this thread as possible i'm going to be going through each and every one. So your information is great and I thankyou for taking the time and putting the list down.

I tend to like darker more serious films. I've watched all these several times. If I was to expand my list to a top 20 some comedies would appear. Oh and come on Natural Born Killers is bloody hilarious. Emphasis of the bloody.

Thanks to the people you gave me their lists.

I am very glad someone else brought this up here. No one I know has seen it and I want them to.
But seriously, The Crow is my favorite film of all time. So many epic bits.
