After I bought a CD-32, Jaguar, and 3DO, I had my sights on the Turbografx. Luckily i have managed to snag a rare PAL Turbografx with nine games on Ebay for the cheap price of £60. However I don't know all too much about the library, and I need recommendations. So if you have any games you have played on the virtual console on the wii, or the system itself, please recommend them to me.

Whoa....the TG16. I loved mine. Still have it somewhere deep in my closet. This is going to strain the memory but let's see if I can remember games I enjoyed on it.

Bonk's Adventure 1 & 2
Blazing Lasers
Bloody Wolf
Military Madness
R Type
Dungeon Explorer 1 & 2
Splatter House
Ninja Spirit
Alien Crush (pinball) Never played Devil Crush but it was supposed to be sweet
Y's Book 1 & 2
Y's 3
Exile
Order of the Griffin

I don't remember which ones were CD based. I'm sure there's plenty of other games that I can't recall but it's been a loooooong time since I've fired up the TG16.

I think the Ys games are CD based which is a shame, because i would love to play them.

I've got Alien Crush with the system, and I've already got Splatterhouse, and R-type with other systems. Splatterhouse with the new one (which is far superior to the TG-16 version), and R-type on a Amiga compilation disk i have with my CD-32.

I'll be sure to check the others out though, cheers for the recommendations (i've been thinking about picking up blazing lazers next, because it's common as muck). The console is sadly forgotten, and to be honest I don't expect many replies to this thread.

I'm a collector you see, and so far i have all of the seventh, sixth, and fifth gen machines, so i working my way down to the forth. I probably won't bother with the third gen below though. I'm looking to pick up a SNES, and a Mega CD/Mega Drive combo next. Though i do have a lot of Mega Drive games on compilations, and a few SNES games on VC, so i'm saving them for last.

I honestly don't remember playing many games I would consider all that great on the TG-16. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy having the system and enjoyed playing some of the games on it, but I'm finding it really hard to come up with anything I'd really recommend. Oh, and the handheld version of the system was just awesome.

A couple of recommendations I can make:
The Bonk series - really fun if slightly easy platformers with some interesting mechanics. Basically the TG-16's Mario or Sonic, and honestly nearly as good.
Keith Couarge in Alpha Zones - not a great game, but a good one, and the original pack in title so if you're approaching it as a collector, it's a must have
Legendary Axe - considered by many to be the first (and possibly only if you didn't have the CD add on) killer app for the system. I never liked it much, but it's a seminal title for the system.
JJ and Jeff - Not at all a great game, but playable and containing some fun. I'd recommend it purely for it's strangeness as it's very clearly a game that had no business making it out of Japan but did so anyway.
China Warrior - Terrible as a game, but actually so blatantly bad that it falls into the so bad you have to play it category. As a collector, this is one you have to own.

I've got Legendary Axe, JJ and Jeff, and China Warrior with the system, as well as the afromentioned Alien Crush.

Still i would like Keith Courage, and the bonk games if they weren't so goddamn rare and expensive. They are considered the Killer-app's for the TG-16 for a reason.

Yeah, i've heard China Warrior was terrible, but still i do tend to find some good points about bad games if they are not called Rise of the Robots, or Two Worlds. I swear to god, i would rather have cancer than play those piles of shit masqerading as games.

Even if China Warrior is better than Rise of the Robots, I would still give it a passing grade for that alone.

I always wanted a Turbografx, or the Japanese version, the PC Engine. They were never released in the uk, but expensive, imported games were often reviewed in magazines like Mean Machines.

They were really hyped in the uk gamer press but when I finally got to play on one in emulation, I had a hard time finding impressive games. Way too many Wonderboy style platformers for my liking.

I'm not sure about collector value, I only ever ran an emulator, but my favorite games were:

Y's
Splatterhouse
Gunhed (called Blazing Lazers in the USA) - vertically scrolling shootemup. One of the best shooters of the era on any platform.
Parasol Stars - sequel to Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands
Galaga '90 - addictive ultra-oldskool shootemup
Bloody Wolf - good side scrolling gun + run.
R-Type

Is your PAL Turbografx region free? I know standard US machines were region locked so you couldn't play Japanese games, but if you can then I recommend the following PC Engine games:

Mr Heli - Shootemup (Like Atomic Robo Kid but with a helicopter)
Atomic Robo Kid - (Like Mr Heli with a Robot)
Devil Crash - well reviewed pinball game

New Zealand Story - nice platformer
Gradius and its sequels - classic horizontal shooters
Vigilante - scrolling beatemup. I didn't like this much. It had a lot of publicity in UK magazines at the time.

The Japanese version of J.J. and Jeff is called Kato and Ken and features two real-life TV comedians. When it was released in the US they changed the characters and censored it. As StriderShinryu says, its not a great game, but does have some curiosity value and crude humour.

Yeah The PAL version of the console is pretty much the same as the US version, and play's US only games (considering blazing lazers was the only TG-16 game to get an offical release in the EU). The only problem is that every game will be downsized to 50hz to play on PAL TV's. Kinda like the saturn when you use a import cartridge to play imports on a unmodded European console.

Telegames licensed it in a very limited production run which was only released in the UK and France, So it's incredibly rare. It's also not called the Turbografx 16, but rather just Turbografx and the logo is white with a blue and red underline instead of yellow.

The good thing though is mine comes with a UK plug, some don't. So this is possibly one of the original EU release systems, not just those new boxed EU ones that have been appearing quite a lot on ebay.

To be honest, if a console has a handful of decent games, i would buy it rather than emulate. However I don't think I would buy something like the CD-I unless it came with some video CD's and had an encoder for it to play them. Most of the software on that system wasn't even a game, and the good games on the system are very few indeed, even compared to consoles like the TG-16, 3DO, Jag, and CD-32, which has quite a few worthwhile games available. These consoles are probably not worth it for the casual video game player, or more modern gamers, but for the retro gamers like me, it sure is. I'm more of a gamer than a collector anyway, regardless of the impression i give out sometimes. I only really collect the consoles, and get the games I want to get.

Hey there. Have you have changed the batteries on Genesis and N64 cartridges? I was considering getting the 54-bit driver kit from iFixit for the tri-wing and what looks like the negative mold of a Torx. It seems a good price but I was wondering if it was good for N64/Genesis carts.

Sadly, I've bought security bit sets twice before with no luck. Amazingly, last year I bought Starflight for Genesis and it had two valid game saves on it, tho I suspect the person who sold it simply changed the battery and played a few games for testing.

No I've only ever replace a battery on a Sega Saturn. I never had the need to do it on any of my cartridges.

Have you tried going on Racketboy. They would probably know on that site.
