The Wikipedia article "History of Videogames" has an extensive reference section at the bottom-- I would check those out. You can use Wikipedia as a sort of timeline/organized table of contents, then follow the cited references to confirm the source's accuracy and, if you think it is a trustworthy source, use that to find the details you need.

Well, I figure this link may help, seeing as you can't use wikipedia...
http://www.time.com/time/covers/1101050523/console_timeline/
If I can find anything else that seems useful, I'll edit it into this post...
also, this one may help:

Just use it an then lie about it. I used pretty much wikipeda alone to write my first essay in Uni and I got a solid 2:1 for it.

What was wrong with the Google results? I just did the same thing and found several good sources on the first page, not including wikipedia.

Salford University [http://creativetechnology.salford.ac.uk/fuchs/modules/game_design/game_design_history.htm]
Gamespot [http://www.gamespot.com/gamespot/features/video/hov/]
About.com [http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blcomputer_videogames.htm]

I like the last one the most.

Alternately, why not use the same references that Wikipedia does? Technically you're not using Wikipedia for your information that way, just using it to find out where to find your information.

This a million times.
Don't source Wikipedia, use Wikipedia to get your sources.
Most of the 'important stuff' is sourced at the bottom! Use it!

The Guinness Records gaming edition books have some decent info in them.

How about reading a book? Crazy idea, I realize.

Steven Kent's "The Ultimate History of Video Games" is pretty much all you need. If he doesn't know about it, it didn't happen.

Still use Wiki, but don't plagiarize, write it in your own words, you can get away with that. That's what I did at university.

MY three sections would be:

The beginning of video games
Controversy
Games as they are today and how they're different from the yesteryear

Alternatively, you could break it down as such:

1. Early video games (technologically speaking)
2. The console wars of the 1980s (plenty of info to be had there)
3. The rise of video game addictions in the modern culture of society

Covers your three basic elements; dork, nerd, and geek. A little bit of love for everybody!
